@tunic

i learned it from a belgian friend who used to live here. i was curious about the author, so when you get to the meats part, please share tips. i know it as basically beef, onions, beer. but maybe there's a magic trick.

i see the recipe you linked uses juniper! that's new to me. tasty...

for the meat cuts that work here i prefer what's called chuck roast. it' basically the shoulder. and it's flavorful and cheap and great for slow cooking.

so yeah it's a winter thing, a bit out of season now, but it's the only flemish dish i know, hahaha, so it immediately came to mind when i saw your book.

if you spot any other interesting dishes, kindly recommend them--even in name only, i'm always willing to research good foods.

Bloody still creeping through Brothers Karamazov but about 80% done now.
Been reading a bit less, been distracted by work, potential new work, dating again, etc.

Rob, my man, not to beat on a years-old horse but since we didn’t chat for what felt like at least a year, did you ever read the sequel series to Book of the New Sun? Specifically Book of the Long Sun, which is very close to being just as good? (Book of the Short Sun is pretty badass but it’s not quite at the same level.)

Rob Instigator 04.26.2022 08:29 AM

I found a first edition Book of the Long Sun at the half price bookstore, but have yet to read it.

Will do though....

Severian 04.26.2022 11:19 AM

I'm taking things a bit slower this time around to try and absorb more information that i probably missed last time.

For example the Ringwraiths are the kings of men who originally received those rings. That detail always escaped me somehow. Not this time :D

Rob Instigator 04.28.2022 02:30 PM

I read The Hobbit at least 6 times.

I read Book 1 of Lord of the Rings at least 5 times

I got bored with Book 2 so much I never finished it, and I never read the Return of the King. the movie was all new stuff to me!

Bertrand 04.28.2022 04:16 PM

Last Exit to Brooklyn - impressive

Finished Pascal Garnier's "The Panda Theory." awesome French novel. I tweeted out my review and Gallic Press, publishers of the English translation, re-tweeted it and quoted my review in a "blurb!"
Super cool.

Still Brothers Karamazov! Lmao. I’ve been distracted by a new romance and work stuff, but I’m 9/10 of the way through and it truly is a phenomenal piece of work, sweet Jesus.

Rob Instigator 05.12.2022 09:49 AM

Karamazov was my mom's favorite novel.

I just started reading this a few days ago. Let's see how far I can go on it.
I always find it a bit annoying when there's a dictionary at the end of the book with a description of the common terms, and then to find out the word I'm looking for isn't in it Is it my crappy English knowledge or did they forget to add it?

Only a gazillion pages to go and then 10 more books :D
Never saw the movie, the first one, or it was so long ago that I don't remember. Didn't see the new one either

so how did you like it? this book blew my mind when i first read it, i must have been 18 or so. i go back to it every so often, and while i now can see through its construction, it still manages to keep me engaged. kinda hate the new cover lol. but yeah so much fun.

I'm a very slow reader, I'm currently still at page 126. [spoiler alert but not really] They've only just moved to the other planet and discovered the botanical garden.
As I said, I had to get used to the lingo but I do like how it's written

For some reason I'm picturing the Duke as the Dude

now you make me wanna read it again hahahahaaa

Severian 06.09.2022 06:20 AM

OH! I forgot to mention I finished The Brothers Karamazov! What an excellent book. Dense but not impenetrable at all. Rich in parable, allegory, insight and humor. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes tragic. I just loved it.
Well worth the effort.

Rob Instigator 06.09.2022 08:56 AM

I will need to read it. I never read it but it was my moms fave book.

she said when I was born, if I had been a girl, the plan was to name me Alexandra Ludovika Torres!

I was initially recommended it by someone who named their kid Alyosha (Alexey for short)!

I am reading cyberpunk author Rudy Rucker's autobiography NESTED SCROLLS.

So far so awesome.

LuntiX 08.29.2022 12:53 PM

The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.

It took me a few attempts to get started, but it's actually quite a page turner once you start getting invested in the characters. The beginning is definitely a bit of a slog though.

Severian 08.30.2022 06:12 AM

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

Also I read The Time Traveler’s Wife and WOW JESUS WHAT A TERRIBLE BOOK. Just a horrible story about grooming, featuring a bunch of truly loathsome people being awful. It’s not cute or charming, it’s fucking weird and bad.
Plus it is 100% about grooming, can’t convince me otherwise. But it’s like, “the grooming is OK in this instance!”

Eat shit, Time Traveler’s Wife, fuck off

Rob Instigator 10.28.2022 09:55 AM

Finally finished the amazing and seminal work THE ORIGIN OF ALL RELIGIOUS WORSHIP by Charles-François Dupuis.

My thoughts on it are here: https://rxttbooks.blogspot.com/2022/...red-truth.html

Severian 10.29.2022 06:10 AM

Still reading The Historian, hah! Big long book, to be sure, but I’m only halfway through, and I knocked out Brothers Karamazov in much less time. So maybe it’s just not the right time to read The Historian.

Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard.

Trying to read Mariam Petrosyan's Gray House, but it's a bit discomforting.

I read Edgar Hilsenrath's Night last month, I guess I should have found something lighter between these two books.
And I've received my order of Selby' Demon...
What was I thinking about?
