My head was buried in Thurston's monitor, which is why I think I don't really age ever since.

If you were at the show before that (earlier in the year), I'm actually even more envious because the was Sonic Youth, U-men, Green River. The line-up for the one I was at was Sonic Youth, Upright Citizens (hardcore band from Germany, not bad at all that night), and Green River. Being a serious U-men fan, I still feel I missed out by not getting on the boat quite as quickly.

I've seen Thurston play maybe 30 times since then, but it will be cool to see him on stage with somebody he must approach with some serious reverence. Jandek's last show in Portland may have been the best live performance I'd seen since that Sonic Youth '85 gig.

I was at the GR show, Gorilla was a hell of a venue, huH? Had to love them 15 cent gin an tonics.

Dead-Air 12.12.2009 11:59 PM

Green River played both gigs. the difference was between U-men and Upright Citizens. I loved the dive, but it was all ages and there was no bar, speakeasy or otherwise, when I went there. makes it more like you were at the first of the two gigs then.

best show I saw aside from SY there was Tupelo Chain Sex with a crowd of like six. fucking great jazz/hardcore/sloppy crossover group that.

hmmmmm

it was a lot of years ago, but I sure remember the bar. Against one wall of the cavernous basement space.....

sounds more like you're talking about The Graven Image than Gorilla Gardens. Gorilla Gardens was a run down multiplex (well only two rooms actually) porn theater converted into one room of punk shows and one room of spandexy metal shows (thus the birth of grunge, actually, Green River was the band that played in both rooms!) It was completely all ages, and not underground in terms of depth, anyway.

Not to be a party pooper - just a heads up so you keep your recording equipment, let's say, camouflaged. From bt-dimeadozen-org:

Yes, most of us in Portland are excited about that show as well!

Something to consider, however, is that Corwood Industries have been actively recording and video-taping every performance, for tentative release at some point in the future. There have been "no-taping" policies at shows, for the specific reason that the shows were being officially documented.

A number of the earlier shows have just recently been recently released as either CDs or DVDs, including all of the shows from 2005, and the last Jandek appearance in Portland, from 2006. I know of one taper who recorded this show, and there is virtually no difference between their tape and the official release, which contained the entire performance. Nothing seems to be getting edited out of the shows which are officially released.

It may takes a while for the official releases to come out, but they do seem to be happening. The sole exception seems to be the show from Houston 2006, which was not a Jandek show per se.

maybe would be better, after all, not to tape, if J will release it anyways....

he will. I'd respect his wishes. he's the real deal and given his releases are usually several dollars cheaper than any contemporary label's nobody could ever call him greedy.

It was definitely a life changing experience. They cleared the room except for like 6 of us, and I was burrying my head in Thurston's monitor begging for more.

Jandek live is almost that good too. I just listened to Portland Thursday for the first time since the gig, and sadly the recording is much less well mixed than it sounded in the room. His vocals were way clearer. Still, gets me jazzed for April!

Dead-Air 04.26.2010 11:49 PM
