Saw them last night in Manchester. Truthfully, I only went because of Steve, but they were really quite good. Like proto-yoof meets something joy division-eqsue. They're a bit full on all the time whereas I prefer some more dynamics in my music, but a great way to spend an evening.

Support was interesting - Imra Vep/Sex Hands which seem to be two fronts of the same group. Not sure which is which, but the dude with the guitar alone was really good. Reminded me of Nick Cave for some reason and I'm not keen on Nick Cave, but the dude was great. Very honest music.

Posters had "Disappears (feat. ex-Sonic Youth Steve Shelley)" but by the end of the night someone had tried their best to scrub out the "ex" on them all. Steve says he was kicked out and nobody told him/ he hadn't read pitchfork. He is doing a new record with Disappears arround October and a new Lee record around the end of the year. Result!

EVOLghost 06.02.2011 02:06 PM

I did end up seeing them in Chicago at teh empty bottle. I was so glad I did. Steve Shelly kicked my face in. and...I also bought that one cassette....That's the cassette they recorded in the SY studio?

philsbootlegs 06.07.2011 06:13 PM

Saw them at Borderline on 31 May. Got a recording of it but won't promise when I'll get around to uploading it. Someone picked up a bit of paper with the set list from the stage. It reads:
Magics
Halo
Superstition
All gone wht (sic)
Marigold
Fear of Darkness
Lux
Gone completely
Pre language
Hibernation sick
Brother J
Revisiting

Saw these guys 2 nights ago in Toronto for a great gig at Sneaky Dee's.

The Psychic Paramount opened for them and were fantastic. Earsplittingly loud and feedback machines, really great jams and most 'songs' just segued into the next, which i enjoyed.

Disappears came on around 12 and played a solid set. I recognized most songs as being off GUIDER although definitely some new tunes in there. they finished with revisiting which was just phenomenal-its such a simple yet overpowering jam. After yelling for more, brian asked whether we wanted a suicide cover or more disappears...i yelled BOTH and then they went into either an unrecognizable suicide cover or a new disappears tune, likely the latter.
I met steve after the show, and he truly is as nice/easygoing as most people on here claim. He said hes playing some stuff on the new spectre folk record. I also asked if he was playing on Lee's solo record and he said he is on a couple tracks! I quickly became at a loss for words but thanked him for coming to Canada and for playing in such a small, intimate venue. Picked up both the disappears LP's from for $10-steal.

Disappears are just fucking great. I have had the privilege of seeing them live. Great throw-back no wave shit. Not incredibly original, but they do what they do very well, and Steve did a great job with them.

Album Lux is one of my faves of the last few years.

For fans of early SY, Joy Division, and especially the Fall. :)

there's a live recording from Madchester on June 11 on this blog:
http://tarquinlive.blogspot.com/2011...ers-1-jun.html
My own recording from Brussels (as support of Thurston) is still to be uploaded to Dime. Hopefully it will be finished soon, but I can't guarantee that

Had to listen to their albums a couple of times, but I'm really starting to like them especially that last one. And especially that very very long tune.

I thought I had posted a link here, but it looks like it vanished. Are you using a download manager? I understand these don't always work very well with rapidshare. Let me know if there are still problems and I'll see if I can upload it somewhere else.

I've never gone in for FLACs etc. but I think I know a man who can. Leave it with me.

I keep trying to reply to your post but it's not having it. Are you using a download manager? That may be the problem. Try without and see if that works.

Thanks for trying to reply but I managed to get this in the end after someone uploaded it to a different host. I've just tried to see if I can get it from yr page now but the rapidshare link still doesn't work for me. I'm not using a download manager. When I click on the rapidshare link it goes to this page but I can't see a download button. Do I need to be a rapidshare member? I use rapidshare lots and have never had this problem before.

Anyway like I said I've got this now, I just wasn't sure if yr link was the problem. Thanks for recording and sharing Phil!

Still have problems using the reply function.

It is the green rectangular button with "download" written on it. I know these things are sometimes deceptive; screens are littered with download buttons that actually deliver a piece of crap and not the file you're after. But this is the right one. You don't need a rapidshare subscription to download from there, but if you have one it should be faster, eliminate waiting and also enable multiple parallel downloads.

stu666 09.14.2011 01:58 PM

ok I get it now, I think my security setting on my browser was blocking it. Thanks again Phil for all of yr great recordings!

disappears (with steve) new lp in 2012….
Published on September 28, 2011 in current. 0 Comments
Chicago’s Disappears have recorded basic tracks for a new lp to be released in early 2012. The upcoming record to be released on Kranky Records will be Disappears first LP with Steve Shelley. Basic tracks were recorded in Hoboken, NJ with Aaron Mullan engineering.

Disappears will play at the Empty Bottle in Chicago, IL on New Year’s Eve.

Work continues on a collaborative LP with disappears, white/light and steve shelley to also be released in 2012.

The band have a 5-song Tour EP CDR ‘Live from Echo Canyon’ recorded at sonic youth’s Hoboken, NJ studio with the new Disappears line-up - it’s available as a cassette from PlusTapes ( a few copies of the limited edition cdr + the cassette have made their way to the sy webstore). “Hive Mind’, one of the songs from ‘Live at Echo Canyon’, is featured in this video made by Damon Carruesco.

Brian Case of Disappears list 10 of his favorite albums in Dusted.

A collaborative 7″ with Steve, Disappears and white/light is also available at the sy webstore.

wow, i just found this thread for the first time ever and i'm giving them a listen on their myspace. 2 very different tracks so far from LUX. gone completely & magics. the 2nd one blows the 1st one out of the water. is that steve-influenced? i'd listen to the rest before posting but my short attention span would probably impede it. anyway thanks for the heads up.
