i don't understand what's not to like about expjetset, i love it

Jeremy 10.27.2009 10:53 AM

The songs aren't good? Kim and Thurston both sound annoying throughout the entire record? Shitty Lee song?

Just what I think....

~Jeremy~

Rob Instigator 10.27.2009 11:11 AM

Boring album. Most boring album SY ever put out. plain ol thin sounding songs, like a toss-off, sounds like ti was written quickly and not as worked over as other sonic youth collections of songs.

It is the only album I do not like (meaning I like less than half the songs on it, so on avrage, I do not like eJST&NS)

Toilet & Bowels 10.27.2009 11:24 AM

weird. oh well, it's your loss.

Rob Instigator 10.27.2009 11:48 AM

Murray Street has gotten more boring with each passing year too.

I do not see it as a loss at all.
More like a fart in the wind I do not feel like smellin

Derek 10.27.2009 12:19 PM

Not as bad as Dirty.

Genteel Death 10.27.2009 12:22 PM

Dirty is a GREAT album!!

Derek 10.27.2009 12:26 PM

I hate it with all my might. I don't know why but it's just something to it I can't stomach. I don't think I like any of the songs.

Trasher02 10.27.2009 12:27 PM

I don't see what everyone's problem is with EJSANS. I really like it.

Genteel Death 10.27.2009 12:28 PM

HERESY Derek! HERESY!

I was wondering what non-sonic youth records they are comparing it too, to say this album is so bad.

Derek 10.27.2009 12:33 PM

I think I will relisten to Dirty tonight just to see if my opinion has changed any.

Which is the shitty Lee song? You mean lack of a Lee song?

Skink and Sweetshine are two of my all-time fav songs. As a whole, Experimental Jet Set is quintessential Sonic Youth for me, a weird arty grunge oddity, minimal, mystical and addictive.

notyourfiend 10.27.2009 12:57 PM

Sweet Shine owns us all.

jennthebenn 10.27.2009 12:59 PM

Starfield Road and Sweet Shine are two of the greatest SY songs ever, and neatly wash out the nasty taste left by Androgynous Mind and Self Obsessed and Sexxee, two of the not-at-all greatest. (I admire the sentiments behind both songs, but the execution? Not really.)

I agree with you, except that I actually really like Self Obsessed and Sexxee. It's not their best work but yeah, I can really identify with the "message" if you will...

gualbert 10.27.2009 01:08 PM

Sweet Shine alone makes it a good record.

SONIC GAIL 10.27.2009 01:28 PM

Winner's Blues alone makes it a good record (and Starfeild Road)

Skuj 10.31.2009 12:41 AM

",,,,and now, I have other dreams."

This is such a great little record, and by "little" I mean understated, mellow.....that's why it is so criminally overlooked.

mysonichaircut 10.31.2009 07:24 AM

its great, and the one i've probably listened to the most. the only song on it i dont like that much is self obsessed and sexxe, but its still a good song. the others are just brilliant. and in case of the sound engeneering its probably their best record.

pinkstation 10.31.2009 01:51 PM

i might be the only one who feels this way,
and its probably irrelevant anyway,
but i like rather ripped better

nice comparison. both records were more pop-oriented, as opposed to longer jams of murray street. i guess the eternal is pop-oriented too. i wonder what the youth think themselves!

Nope. I found I like one or two more songs than I did before though. Maybe I'll like it more as time goes on... because this is the only Sonic Youth album I can not bother with.

Genteel Death 11.01.2009 07:24 AM

Do you like rather ripped more than dirdeee?

Derek 11.01.2009 07:41 AM

Hmm.. well I liked Rather Ripped when it came out but I've not listened to it since then so... maybe, maybe not.

pinkstation 11.01.2009 09:37 AM

no,
i personally really like the SECOND half of dirty.
"JC"
"Purr"
"Chapel Hill"
"Wish Fullfillment"

i think those are just good songs

[Sandbag] 11.01.2009 10:22 AM

blues

been listening to this album a lot recently...

I'm one of those rare fans who thinks RR is one of their strongest works. I think it's above and beyond Experimental Jet Set, which I think is probably their worst record to my ears.

~Jeremy~

isitmybody 11.01.2009 06:24 PM

it's my favourite !!!!

Seandi 11.03.2009 09:45 PM

It's a strong record. A rocking horse winner.

Satan 11.03.2009 10:42 PM

you know i listened to it recently and it's an ok record. not their best but not bad. bull in the heather is great of course.

Chris Lawrence 11.04.2009 03:00 AM

that sig picture is amazing, Satan.

i listened to jet set at work the other night at random and you know, i really love it. it's an oddity, for sure, but i think it works. how can you argue w/ 'winner's blues' 'bull in the heather' 'starfield road' 'skink' 'bone' 'androgynous mind' 'doctor's orders' & 'sweet shine'?! and i just named most of the record...

really beautiful guitar tones all over, some great vocals, a lot of really soft songs, which they don't do fairly often, and some quirky weird quick rocker type things...i dunno, i think it's great. as i believe i said earlier, the biggest downfall is no lee song.

mostly i just replied to comment on the pony though.

Rob Instigator 11.04.2009 12:34 PM

naptime music for old folks in the skronk old folk's home.

Genteel Death 11.04.2009 12:37 PM

Wrong thread, Rob. They Might Be Giants's thread is on page 79 of non-sonic sounds. You started it, I think.

Rob Instigator 11.04.2009 12:42 PM

piece of dirt
that is what I'm standing on today

waltermcphilp 11.04.2009 01:47 PM

It's a pretty neat album.
