Chris Lawrence 06.16.2007 03:16 PM

true as far as i know (via a friend who works @ starbucks).

hansjoakim 06.16.2007 03:18 PM

well, here's to hoping that's it a joke ;)

we'll just have to wait for the rest of the interview at pitchfork this monday to see if he actually dismissed the idea later in the conversation... pretty hairy by the 'forkers to put this up as a news story if thurston was just joking though, right?

still, the indie godfathers on starbucks? geez.

but what about the celebs doing SY songs? i mean, why? if they got some nice indie bands to do covers that'd be one thing. i just don't see the motivation for this disc in the first place. if SY got a song they'd like to put out somewhere, put it on a 7".

Everyneurotic 06.16.2007 03:32 PM

next thing you know, akon is going to guest on their next album.

So it's a compilation record of artists choosing songs of Sonic Youth. There's going to be one exclusive song of ours that we'll record, so that's something we have to record.

it's their songs, not covers

and you know, Starbucks' Hear music label is an INDEPENDENT label, it's not under control from Universal, EMI, Warner or Sony BMG, i don't get the sell-out label anyways, it's a rather pompous tag to label someone like Sonic Youth whose credentials are quite intact

Everyneurotic 06.16.2007 04:00 PM

shut up!!!!!! they suck now!!!! i still liked them a couple of days ago...i can't....i can't go on...talking

*runs away crying*

seriously though, this thread is hilarious, between the people who are truly disappointed at this and the ones who are getting all ultra fan boys saying how awesome it is that this record is happening...pure gold!!!

sy disc on starbucks is the new against the grain pedo conspiracy thread.

Who cares if their music is sold at Starbucks. If they sold their songs to TV commercials that would compromise the music (can anyone listen to Led Zepplin's "Rock n' Roll" without cringing now?); but allowing people to buy a CD when they walk into a coffee shop isn't a big deal. Sometimes I wonder whether people on this board actually like SY's music or just think that it's cool to say they like them.

screamingskull 06.16.2007 04:50 PM

fuck off

Everyneurotic 06.16.2007 04:57 PM

actually, you are right, i like sonic youth not because of the music, since i rarely listen to them, but because i want to be cool.

funny thing to do with this thread, instead of the whole starbucks thing think sy decided to invade irak or some other country, then read the posts. laughs are a given!

screamingskull 06.16.2007 04:57 PM

sonic youth fans are the koolest people out there man!

Danny Himself 06.16.2007 04:58 PM

Nah, he made a good point. The way people are reacting to this is like the starbucks affilation will tarnish SY's cool image or whatever.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the ikara cult 06.16.2007 05:00 PM

I dont really mind about the "sellout" debate (though i maintain i believe this story is some kind of elaborate joke, possibly because the band are a bit bored from not recording new music), i dont care how people discover something, all that matters is whether their passion is genuine. And if it isnt, they themselves will realise it in the end, they dont need others to point it out.

It's Starbucks. A coffee shop. It's not like they're putting the cd out on a label funded by Exxon or Halliburton.

Hardly a "coffee shop". It's a fucking corporation. It ruins small, independently owned businesses. And not to mention the coffee is fucking horrible.

k-krack 06.16.2007 05:16 PM

By the way, I really hope this is a joke...

the ikara cult 06.16.2007 05:19 PM

Well irrespective of jokez, its their decision to make. We owe them, they dont owe us. So as long as it doesnt result in pandering and a reduction in quality of output the economic ethics and the choices made are down to them.
And as ive said, i hate chain coffee shops like Starbucks. But the most effective action one can take is just not going there.

Mark Ibold 06.16.2007 06:16 PM

i tried to convince them not to do it, i was like guys its a bad idea, but they just said "hey mark you're not even a proper member of this band".

i'd shell out $15 bucks for that. especially if he goes on tour with them and humps thurston like he did that 14 year old girl.

but really, so what if they put out a record to be sold at starbucks? hoes gotta eat too.

Mark Ibold 06.16.2007 06:33 PM

the band have more than enough money, trust me. they just decided this year to sell out in a big way.

val-holla-ing 06.16.2007 06:40 PM

who fucking cares?

and who's to say that they won't release the exclusive track on the website or something like that for the fans who don't feel the need to buy another cd for just one track or those who are pretending to be too proud/indie/hip/whatthefuckever to care?

Why dont anyone ever listen to you???

Mark Ibold 06.16.2007 06:43 PM

i know! man. but it's their band, i just play bass for them sometimes. i told them the fan's wouldn't like it. But they don't like you guy's so................................

the ikara cult 06.16.2007 06:47 PM

yeah its ok. We're powerless to stop the march of artistic merit into the flames of sellout hell.

Mark Ibold 06.16.2007 06:49 PM

Thurston explained it to me over a Venti Iced late, he said "it's been 24 years, i need to make some real money out of this sometime soon, man"

pantophobia 06.16.2007 06:51 PM

totally, i mean those raspberry mochas don't buy themselves. and besides the band need to buy their own go-kart course to beat those pesky awesome color kids

Mark Ibold 06.16.2007 06:53 PM

see, Lee is always right, he said the fans would come around eventually. and see you already are.

the ikara cult 06.16.2007 06:57 PM

ah there is no price too great for a gokart track

jennthebenn 06.16.2007 07:00 PM

driver 8, take a coffee break

Mark Ibold 06.16.2007 07:12 PM

That's Lee's favorite pass time.

sarramkrop 06.17.2007 04:52 AM

Wipe your big fat indie tears off your faces. Music is sold like any other product, so what difference does it make if it's sold in Starbucks or Topshop? The problem is its quality, rather than the outlet.

Danny Himself 06.17.2007 04:53 PM

u guise both gai.

Iain 06.17.2007 05:26 PM

I won't be buying it. But largely because I will have everything on it already bar the exclusive track which, if Rather Ripped is anything to go by, will be shit.

Are we accepting this as the real Mark Ibold, he's on the SY fourum more than any member of SY and is talking shit about the band he's playing with, to the fans?

HECKLER SPRAY 06.17.2007 05:33 PM

yes, we are.
We are so naive...
