Oh, and wouldn't you know it, Mark McGuire solo already has like 8 new albums this year haha. WhaT I've heard has been rad though.

davenotdead 05.14.2010 10:08 AM

yeah i sometimes wonder if mark mcguire ever does anything else but eat and play guitar

dntrecords 05.14.2010 07:06 PM

listening to the editions mego 2xlp right now also..good stuff

TheFoxBen 05.29.2010 02:04 PM

I just discovered them today and I'm pretty sure they're becoming my favorite drone/ambient band. I listened to Emeralds (2009), Solar Bridge, The Overlook and their latest Does It Look Like I'm Here? and they're all fantastic.

I also listened to a McGuire solo album (Language Barrier), very reminiscent of Manuel Göttsching/Ashra, all that kind of progressive electronic of the 70's.

His project Skyramps (with Oneohtrix Point Never) is awesome too.

God, I have not only discovered a great band today but also a whole amazing scene, I'm happy.

Derek 05.29.2010 02:27 PM

Honestly if you like this stuff then you really need to listen to the new Robe./UUUUUU split tape http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ACUDBB2X

It's verrrrry similiar to the Emeralds sound but with more going on. Sorry for the shameless promotion but you know, it's right up the Emeralds alley.

The link is dead :/

Derek 05.29.2010 03:13 PM

It's not?

Hmm... I'll upload it to mediafire or sendspace for you.

TheFoxBen 05.29.2010 03:21 PM

The link works now haha, I'm downloading it.

Derek 05.29.2010 03:45 PM

Hahaha.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/nonkvd There's a sendspace link anyway for anyone who wants to download from a different site than megaupload.

atsonicpark 06.01.2010 02:05 AM

I HIGHLY recommend Klaus' Schulze's "Timewind", from 1975. It's pretty much what all these bands are referencing (careful not to say "ripping off") in their music.

http://www.mediafire.com/?ktzotmmc1zj

Pretty much all his stuff is great, but Timewind is the one. It's probably the best type of solo synth shit I've heard.

_slavo_ 06.01.2010 02:14 AM

That new Emeralds album is kind of a dissapointment.

atsonicpark 06.01.2010 02:17 AM

I dunno about that. They're doing something different than the droney stuff now. They're progressing. I like that. It isn't my favorite but I find it really interesting, some of the songs are really really good.

EvdWee 05.19.2011 05:31 AM

visited their gig last night in OT301, Amsterdam. Had seen them on Godspeed ATP. This time I was really carried away. Maybe also due to excessive amount of beer due to the delay in starting time.

Ah, I've got a copy of that one ;), but I don't think it's best by any means. I think Dream Team or A Pocket Full Of Rain are two of my favourites of his.

I'm having a revision break tomorrow night to watch Emeralds in Shoreditch.

atsonicpark 05.20.2011 07:54 AM

Generally, the best McGuire stuff is the songs that are longer (you know, over 10 minutes), where he can really expand and layer. There are some tracks where he will layer 4 or 5 guitars, a mini orchestra of guitars looping.

I'd say his best is his s-t one from last year or Pocket Full of Rain.

I just like when it's more Amon Duul II than Tangerine Dream, with that guy....... not that I don't like TD, haha....... but that one, I dunno, it just osunds perfect to my ears.........

The Watcher 05.20.2011 05:33 PM

Weird I just went to the record store to pick up a birthday gift for my brother, and they had the new 2xCD in stock...... STOKED.

Derek 05.21.2011 05:42 PM

Weird I went to a record store today after reading this thread and they were playing Mark McGuire over the shop stereo.

The Watcher 05.22.2011 08:42 AM

Which record store was it......

Gulasch Noir 08.28.2011 02:01 PM

I'm really not up to date, i guess. I heard the first Emeralds a few weeks ago. I'll be seing them in one week. Should I be happy? I'm wondering what else I have missed in the music world.

EvdWee 08.29.2011 10:58 AM

it's quite good.

you are going to rhiz?

Gulasch Noir 08.29.2011 12:37 PM

Yes, on the 6th. You're coming around from Utrecht?

Edit: I see you do. Wooden shjips are also on my list. Are you studying in Vienna?

EvdWee 08.30.2011 05:14 AM

I am going to do an internship at BOKU for 6 months, starting the 5th.

You are studying there?

Gulasch Noir 08.30.2011 09:54 AM

Yep, studying. See you at the rhiz, I'll be wearing my black suit.

EvdWee 08.30.2011 10:52 AM

still don't know whether i will be there: conference starts that day, don't know where i will end up...

pad_023 01.19.2013 01:30 PM

They have broken up.

the ikara cult 01.19.2013 02:39 PM

Probably for the best, musically speaking.

_slavo_ 01.23.2013 03:27 AM

Sad news. I used to like them quite much.

Genteel Death 08.30.2013 04:12 AM

apparently dusty of puffy areolas formed a very heavy band with 2 guys who played in emeralds.

jimbrim 08.30.2013 05:03 AM

Wow, where did you hear about that? I'm sure John Elliott will be on board as he's played with them before, but I'm curious to who know else is involved.

Genteel Death 08.30.2013 05:26 AM

dusty himself told me. he said that he will send me some cd or tape when they get something recorded. i am really looking forward to hear the fruits of this collaboration.
