Ghost of Guitars Past 08.03.2009 07:11 AM

Cool. That's good to know.

pantophobia 08.03.2009 02:30 PM

i have to say after having been keeping up with what has been going on with Jenn on her west coast jaunt...

...for pure literary gold this last week for her has been far more interesting, exciting, drama-filled and sooooo much more i can't even say then anything in the book

jennthebenn 08.05.2009 11:05 AM

Sold 71 copies so far...after the first 100 are gone, all future books will
be unnumbered AND AND AND subject to international shipping. So pounce!

Rob Instigator 08.05.2009 11:07 AM

Finished it last night Jenn. Great stuff. I will be posting a review on -FUPPETS- by Friday.

Anngella 08.08.2009 05:33 PM

I just read the "chapter" about the very first SY show (Milwaukee 06) that I went to and it brought back lovely memories. I'm excited to read the rest!

_slavo_ 08.09.2009 12:44 AM

Jenn, I started reading the book yesterday night and I love it! so much wit and so much passion for music put together .. wow.
i was about to ask about that 8/8/2002 show in DC - you wrote you had a grey Snoopy T-Shirt and greyer shorts on ... now I recall I MUST HAVE SEEN YOU there because I remember a girl like that. Did you not leave DC from the local Greyhound station that night? Because I think I saw you there as well, when I was waiting for the bus to Baltimore.

jennthebenn 08.09.2009 10:03 PM

Yah, dude, that had to be me. I no longer have that shirt unfortunately.

Fuck, I should have come and said hi.
Anyway, the book is wonderful. I'm halfway though it now - very catchy.

stu666 08.10.2009 02:21 AM

Just finished Jenn, once i started i couldn't stop reading it, this is the quickest i've read any book. i really enjoyed it and now want more...

_slavo_ 08.10.2009 02:35 AM

My favourite quote so far: "Did we just mosh to Shadow of a doubt? Are we retarded?"

Moshe 08.10.2009 02:56 AM

i liked the one comparing SY to chicken!

Portland, 7/28/09, backstage.

nicfit 08.13.2009 05:00 PM

nice ass....

I mean, nice to see Lee with the OPERA MAGNA!!
Guess it will end up in No Setlist 2.

Rob Instigator 08.13.2009 08:53 PM

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Rob Instigator 08.13.2009 08:54 PM

my sonic youth nerd dick just got hard

Magic Wheel Memory 08.13.2009 08:55 PM

I saw Lee at the Goodbye 20th Century discussion this evening and asked him about No Setlist afterwards. He was pretty enthused about it! He talked about meeting Jenn and said how she has sort of built up this network of SY fans and I think he compared it to a Grateful Dead communal sort of thing.

jennthebenn 08.13.2009 09:13 PM

:D!

jennthebenn 08.13.2009 09:17 PM

One of the biggest things I wanted to get across with the book is that I
don't do this in a bubble. It's all about meeting like-minded folks, sharing
thoughts and feelings, maybe if you're fortunate enough making FRIENDS.
All bonded by a shared affection for one band. Rob got it in his Fuppets
review; glad to see Lee picking up on it too.

mil_pl 08.14.2009 05:16 AM

i'm not fanzbook fan.

jennthebenn 08.14.2009 07:08 AM

Ah well, I like you anyway, mil_pl.

mil_pl 08.14.2009 07:18 AM

I like you too Jenn! it wasn't my point.

GuppyFish 08.16.2009 09:05 AM

It came a few days ago. I spent a several hours at my local bar drinking shochu and reading the book. I figured you had to be a real SY fan, and probably also a board member to get into the book. But that turned out not to be the case. I think the book will speak to anyone who has chosen to step into the river and let it carry them someplace new. Who can't help but to like a clever story of transformation hidden in several years worth of concert reviews.

All, I want to know is why that guy kicked your suitcase at ATP. That's such a random and senseless thing, unless he was sizing it up for a hidden stash of electronics to abscond with.

No Setlist: A Preview

jennthebenn 08.31.2009 02:47 PM

I'm curious for a few more opinions from those who are reading/have read.

About half way through...and loving it.

The way you describe the ATP gig in England gives me goose-bumps. I want to go to a SY gig like that!!:)

jennthebenn 08.31.2009 03:22 PM

You can't go wrong with SY at ATP. It's gold, Barry, gold.

whorefrost 09.18.2009 10:10 AM

Hey Jenn, yr book is fantastic. I delved into it and am about 40 pages from the conclusion. The whole thing is great but especially liked reading about the English ATPs and looking forward to reading about No Fun.
Also, love how you say "Got to. It's real life."
Cool pics too.
All in all, it has inspired me to write about some of the Sonic gigs I've attended over the years which I will post when I have finished.

jennthebenn 09.18.2009 10:36 AM

Yes! I love your writing.

krischanski 09.22.2009 01:57 AM

Don't know if I like fanbooks. Don't know if I like the other fans. So just ordered it to have a look.

jennthebenn 09.22.2009 02:12 AM

I think it's more than a "fanbook." Then again, I would think that.

Rob Instigator 09.22.2009 09:39 AM

what the fuck is a "fanbook?"

No SetList is a tour diary/personal diary

Rob Instigator 09.23.2009 03:36 PM

is not every nonfiction book the same
?

krischanski 11.17.2009 04:43 AM

@Rob: No, of course.

But I think I like the book. I don't understand all the kool slangish words and phrases. But sometimes the unperfect and personal style of writing is very ... funny? I don't know how to explain in English.

But the typography hurts!

What do you do when you see your favorite band perform live 40 times over 11 years? If you're an aspiring author like Jenn Benningfield, you write a book about it. No Setlist is not just a compilation of Sonic Youth concert reviews covering the time period May 1998 to May 2009. It is more than anything else an unabashed love story--of the creative spirit, of friends, of discoveries, of life. Aided and abetted by 44 pages of tremendous color photos (some personal, most shots from select concerts), these journals immerse you into the experience of countless miles on the bus or plane, exploring the sights, and meeting numerous other Sonic Youth fans at home and abroad. No Setlist is a must-have for not only Sonic Youth fans, but also anyone seeking to understand the unique mindset of that beautiful beast, the "hardcore fan."
