1. Sonic Youth/ Confusion is sex
2. Bad Moon Rising/ Evol/ Made In USA
3. Sister
4. Daydream Nation
5. Goo/ Dirty
6. Experimental Jet Set Trash & No Star
7. Washing Machine
8. A Thousand Leaves/NYC Ghosts & Flowers
9. Murray Street/ Sonic Nurse
10. Rather Ripped

sonic sphere 02.19.2007 08:00 AM

early sonic is my favourite. the ep and confusion gets my vote

Concept7or8 02.19.2007 09:15 AM

Statrted off with Dirty, over the years I've gotten more into their more recent stuff. Think its because I've lost that young adult angst.

Bal 02.19.2007 10:41 AM

early and mid 80s stuff.
dark vibes get my blood going!

Trasher02 02.19.2007 11:12 AM

Ugh that's a really hard choice.
I went with Goo/Dirty.

Magic Wheel Memory 02.19.2007 12:45 PM

I once heard Evol, Sister and Daydream Nation described as "The Holy Trinity," and it's hard to disagree. I would keep those three consecutive albums before anything else they've done.

agreed.

HaydenAsche 02.19.2007 02:20 PM

While CIS is my favorite record I voted for BMR and EVOL. Two great fucking records.

jon boy 02.19.2007 02:31 PM

bad moon, confusion and sister all strike notes with me but i love a thousand leaves/nyc ghosts and flowers era especially.

against_the_grain 02.19.2007 04:51 PM

kinda tough....era's as in string of consecutive albums....for me....

Goo-A Thousand Leaves....so I guess that'd be the 90s. But that's not to discount there earlier or later material....I spose I'm considered a commercial sellout admirer, huh ?

youthoftomorrow 02.19.2007 06:43 PM

basically BMR through DDN.

Sonic Youth 37 02.19.2007 06:57 PM

Daydream Nation.

This album started it all for me and it was the soundtrack for one of the best and most fun times in my life. Times that I will never forget.

LittlePuppetBoy 02.19.2007 07:25 PM

Daydream nation

musicfallinglikesnow 02.19.2007 07:44 PM

Evol, Bad Moon Rising, Sister.
I don't know why, I got trouble to really get into Daydream Nation, always have. It's like too tidy for me.

sevenveils 02.19.2007 08:28 PM

i think you're on crack to put thousand leaves and nyc ghosts and flowers together!! they are SO different. i looove thousand leaves and really dislike nyc ghosts (except for lee's song). thousand leaves and murray st i will pop in as regularly as any sy record, but nyc ghosts and sonic nurse, almost never. probably never.

ps. i voted for daydream, but it's hard to think of a flaw between evol and thousand leaves!

ZEROpumpkins 02.20.2007 12:11 AM

Evol/Sister/Daydream
But I voted for Sister.

good way of looking at it - the last few years have been better for me than my twenties, I guess they're noughty albums are the soundtrack to my best times. Basically WM onwards is what I listen to most.

I voted for sister but generally would go for the BMR thru to DN era. There are later and earlier albums that I might prefer (CIS for example) but as a period the Blast First era is what I instinctively think of when I think of the band.

The earlier Geffen era (Goo, Dirty, EJSTNS) is probably my least favourite. It seems to me that during that period they weren't sure where to go and as a result were too keen to respond to developments taking place in the Grunge and Riot Grrl scenes. In a sense, this was a period where they became followers rather than leaders. They wanted to hang with 'the kids' a little too much and at times it got a little embarrasing.

sonicl 02.20.2007 08:05 AM

It's a very tough call, after all I love all Sonic Youth's work, but Evol and Sister have the most tracks that are likely to make me squeal with excitment.

Tokolosh 02.20.2007 08:14 AM

EVOL > DDN

i'm not on crack, i only had 10 boxes and sonic youth have done many many albums, some had to be grouped together.

Miss Pornstar 02.20.2007 11:30 AM

Daydream Nation.

And why putting Bad Moon and EVOL together???

the ikara cult 02.20.2007 09:14 PM

I went Murray Street/Nurse as it was when Nurse came out that i really got into SY.

Druzhba 02.20.2007 11:28 PM

From Sister to Washing Machine....

Yeah I see what you mean, though I'm not complaining too much, when I saw the 100% video on MTV I thought WOW! - I was 18 at the time,-otherwise they might have slipped me by.

Still, those 3 albums are the ones I listen to least now

I really do love 'em all, but I just can't shake off the ear-scouring dungeon emanations of NYC G&F (although Mille Feille hasn't really infected me yet). You can tell on NYC Ghosts that they didn't give a fid-uck about exposure!

logcabinrecluse 02.21.2007 01:40 PM

a thousand leaves/syr era for me. i thought those were some of the best shows i went to. most material was new and jammy/loose. i really liked seeing the instrumental versions before atl came out. i remember having the feeling that they had gotten really "mature". that's a loaded word, but that's how i felt. thurston even cut his hair short.

SYRFox 02.21.2007 01:44 PM

1) Bad Moon Rising / EVOL
2) Sonic Youth / Confusion Is Sex
3) A Thousand Leaves / NYC Ghosts & Flowers
4) Daydream Nation
5) Sister
6) Murray Street / Sonic Nurse
7) Goo / Dirty
8) Washing Machine
9) Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star
10) Rather Ripped

Dead-Air 02.22.2007 02:01 AM

It would make more sense to lump Evol and Sister together than Bad Moon Rising and Evol. Evol was the departure point into the pop world. Bad Moon, while arguably "mellower" in some ways than Confusion Is Sex, is still very much closer to that than to Evol. When they toured for Bad Moon, they just played the whole set straight through, mostly in the same order as the album, and didn't say a word between songs. Evol they introduced each song individually.

I voted for Bad Moon, as that's when I first came on board, and had my life permanently altered.

Washing Machine 02.22.2007 08:12 PM

I voted Daydream Nation (because its my favourite album ever). I think of the 80's as a whole as one sonic youth era...i dont know why.

The Holy Trinity thing I disagree slightly with, because I just cant, try as I may (and I do love 'Beauty Lies In The Eye' and SZ) get into Sister...for me the best 3 Sonic Youth albums are Daydream Nation, Bad Moon Rising and EVOL....So the 80's are my favourite SY decade

Someone mentioned it earilier but 'Daydream Nation' evokes such an emotional response, its one of those albums that reminds me of all the good times in life. Nostalgia can have a huge impact on the way we view music. Its one of the reasons I still hold dear those early System of a Down records (dispite their mighty uncoolness). Everytime I listen to them I remember being 14 hanging out with my friends, getting drunk for the first time and ranting for hours about how screwed up everything is (classic Linklater stuff...you know the score). Daydream Nation is such an anthamic, joyous album it immediately brings back those memories thats why I love it.....anyways im perhaps more nostagic than an 18 year old should be!

Confusion is Dante 02.24.2007 09:03 PM

I have to pick the Murray Street/ Sonic Nurse era..... They get better every time they record, and Rather Ripped is amazing, but I thoroughly love Murray Street........and Sonic Nurse.......and Rather Ripped.......
Man!.......I wish I could pick more than one time period.

k-krack 02.24.2007 10:38 PM

I don't think it's fair you grouped EVOL and BMR together. Polar opposites, really! I wouldn't be able to pick, anyway... just sayin'.

Yeah but they both have more in common with each other than anything released after say Sister.
