The ideal Sonic Youth venue?

Seems like an interesting topic...

Hip Priest 03.22.2006 11:16 AM

I think the acoustic dynamics of a cave would be very interesting...

Inhuman 03.22.2006 11:21 AM

Nice thread. I had a hard time between Cave, forest, and concert hall, but it would be really different to have a concert in a cave, plus it will impact the sound due to echoes.

But the noise! The Youth could make it brilliant in a cave, I think. Once they'd adjusted to the dynamics they could manipulate them, toy with them like a kid with a train set. The Youth can do anything, in my opinion.

Sorry, my post was a little ambiguous. I was referring to why I would prefer a cave over the other two haha. It would create the perfect environment for a noise band to play

Sorry, I misread! I was choosing between forest and cave too - the forest would be nice, picnic and wildlife and all that, but the cave would be interesting. It's strange that I would associate different artists with different venues:

Sonic Youth: a cave (or maybe forest)
Aphex Twin: A ruined church
The Fall: A big underground WWII shelter
Foo Fighters: as f*&^ing far away from me as f*&^ing possible.

sonicl 03.22.2006 11:40 AM

You're really enjoying this poll thing aren't you Hip Priest!

I've gone for the cave thing cause I like the idea of SY concerts being events rather than just gigs. If that wasn't going to happen, London places I'd like to see them play are the Royal Albert Hall, the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern or Somerset House.

That would be pretty sweet with Aphex Twin in a Church! The part of me that was going for forest was becasue of the new tour, and seeing the flaming lips play in a forest with Sonic Youth ...amazing!

On the contrary, one of the most interesting concerts ever IMO would be Hair Police, Wolf Eyes, Comets on Fire, and Sonic Youth in a cave

Everyneurotic 03.22.2006 12:23 PM

like the mary jane girls would sing.

in my house
my house

schizophrenicroom 03.22.2006 01:41 PM

They should play with the Flaming Lips, Wolf Eyes, Aphex Twin, and Comets On Fire in Disneyworld.

HaydenAsche 03.22.2006 01:47 PM

I want to see Wolf Eyes play in my bedroom. Or at the mall.

Sonic Youth would be sweet inside a cave only playing pre-85 songs.

Everyneurotic 03.22.2006 01:49 PM

my dream is playing at the mall, and covering "i think we're alone now"

HaydenAsche 03.22.2006 01:57 PM

HAHAHAHA. I want to play the Super Bowl and sing 'I always feel like. Somebody's Watching ME!!!!!'

I want a giant noise-fest to play the mall. Or a kiddie carnival.

little kids are more likely to like noise than the common folk. but an appearance by mothers against noise is imminent. even if that just means andrew wk dressed in drag

I always wondered whether Mothers Against Noise was a joke or not. Apparently there were some of them at the SY, Hair Police, Wolf Eyes concert last year, but judging by the content on their website makes me question their existence.

Everyneurotic 03.22.2006 02:11 PM

spin made an article where they discovered that the ip (or something, like that, some computer hacking thing) of m.a.d. was tracked down to the island/def jam servers, which is andrew wk's label. also, the only one's that supposedly saw the mothers in action were, as you pointed out, we, hp and sy; and the only ones to ever talk about were wolf eyes, who are like best friends with andrew wk and thurston plays (or played?) with awk in to live and shave in la, so chances are they are in the joke too.

but seeing as it was on spin fucking magazine...

schizophrenicroom 03.22.2006 02:13 PM

I want to play "She's my Cherry Pie" in a bakery.

It's most likely AWK. No one seriously talks like that, the crap on MAN.

HaydenAsche 03.22.2006 02:18 PM

My friend's band did an Andrew W.K. Cover.

Rhys was going to rip the video from the streaming for me I think and then I could post it. It was phenomenal.

Everyneurotic 03.22.2006 02:20 PM

cherry pie is pure poetry
heaven is the perfect power ballad

long live warrant!!

strictlycommercial 03.22.2006 02:24 PM

If you're going for a forest it has to be at night, maybe with fog.

krastian 03.22.2006 03:10 PM

Interesting poll. I voted for a cave....that would be insane.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 03.22.2006 03:16 PM

pub, keep it small.

xpressway2yrskull 03.22.2006 03:50 PM

I would've said my house but my lame Dad would tell me to switch off that awful noise before the first song was through. So I would say in a cave in the middle of a winter's night huddled in a circle with a load of SY-obsessed strangers.

noisemachine 03.22.2006 05:06 PM

I think the train station would be interesting. More like a subway station though. Remember the video for pavement's "rattled by the rush" (i think it was)? That would be cool.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 03.22.2006 05:26 PM

I voted house, but cave, forest, and concert hall would be great. They are a good band for playing outdoors.

Say!
I like Sonic Youth and Can!
I do! I like them Sam I Am.
And i would eat them In boat and with a goat andin the rain and on a train and in a car and in a tree. They are so good, so good you see!
So i will eat them in a box, with a fox and in a ouse and with a mouse and i will eat them here or there and i will eat them anywhere.

I do so like Sonic Youth and Can!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Sam I Am..............

sellouteater 03.22.2006 05:29 PM

In my house a privite concert for only me. Sense i have no freinds

next step 03.23.2006 12:41 PM

well I voted for a concert hall; a cave or other places like that would be great for some solo side project.

someone know where the most strage place they have played?

screamingskull 03.23.2006 12:46 PM

i voted for the train station. it would add an extra energy and white noise to the mix.

next step 03.23.2006 12:50 PM

hahha a train station sounds very strange!

Hip Priest 03.24.2006 05:08 AM

Cave it is then. I'll have a word with the band and sort it out. How about Saturday?

marleypumpkin 03.24.2006 05:18 AM

The Orange Peel was an interesting venue to have an SY show in. (August 20, 2004). It only holds about 500 or so, give or take. But that's why it was interesting. It was a very personal show. It felt like the audience was at a rehersal, more than at a concert. As it were, that was my first time seeing them, so seeing them at Bonnaroo this June is going to be wierd for me. But, I still can't wait. I voted club by the way.

Hip Priest 03.24.2006 05:20 AM

Small is definitely superior when it comes to venues The interaction between artist and crowd seems more real or tangible, or something.

marleypumpkin 03.24.2006 05:24 AM

Exactly right Hip Priest. I don't know why, but it felt like we were SY's closest friends, & they were putting on small show just for us. But, they did have a pretty good visual show w/ it.

Hip Priest 03.24.2006 05:27 AM

It's great that they still got to tiny places, like in that Sleepin Arouund video, that looks really small.

And small venues don't encourage the kind of 'HEY DETROIT I CAN'T HEAR YOU, MAKE SOME NOISE!' type theatrics of other bands. WHy is it that the more thousand s of fans are at a venue, the harderit apparantly is for the bandto hear any cheering?

Toxa 03.24.2006 05:31 AM

"bad moon rising" autumn show in the forest :) ehm :D

marleypumpkin 03.24.2006 05:33 AM

Hip Priest:

I hear ya'. There was alot of that at the NIN concert I just saw. & when Trent was saying all this stuff about our city, I got a little annoyed at that.
Knoxville Civic is usually used for hockey games, so it's somewhat a large venue. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show, I just could have a done w/out that.

Hip Priest 03.24.2006 05:35 AM

Yeah. My experience of really small venues too is that often bands will just walk off stage at the end and come and chat with the people there. It's nice, it's like thee band feel safer. That depends on the audience make-up too of course, but it' nice to be able to just talk to people.

marleypumpkin 03.24.2006 05:39 AM

I almost didn't get to see SY. It was an out of state show for me, so when I got to the show, when they were opening the doors & taking tickets & ID, I handed the event staff my TN. ID, & they said they didn't take out of state ID. I almost died right there. But, after some convincing, they let me in, & I saw the best show of my life.
G/A right up front, w/ Kim right in front of me.

The most strange place would probably be the desert, as featured on the Gila Monster Jamboree video. Or Brighton Beach, I suppose.

RdTv 03.24.2006 09:02 AM

A cave would probably be the coolest, but in the spirit of reality I would love to see them play in a small club. Like Hip Priest was saying, you have a good chance to talk with them and hang out. But if gigs in caves were a feasible situation, then I would definetly hop on the wagon.
