Thurston and his interest in black metal...

ok, i think this has been mentioned before, but is he really into black metal? man, he wears alot of those tees i see at his "trees" gigs, like Beherit (early black metal band from Scandanavia?)

or is it something that matt heyner has turned him onto because i do know that heyner is in a black metal band...

just wondering.

This Is Not Here 04.17.2008 07:59 PM

I beleive Matt Hayner had a silver plate with "Emporer" engraved into it on his guitar at Thurston's Trees gig in London. I could be wrong, but if not, thats SO fucking cool.

avantgarde1 04.17.2008 08:25 PM

black metal... ewwwwwww.

scott v 04.17.2008 08:43 PM

i'm not really famaliar or into black metal, some of what i heard is real awful, but i listened to some Beherit and its pretty intense... this website is pretty awesome on the level of stuff you can download...

http://blackdeathmetalarchive.blogsp...scography.html

also finally hearing Burning Witch, but thats not black metal...

Everyneurotic 04.17.2008 11:25 PM

thurston was into venom, bathory and celtic frost since back in the day and those bands are proto-black metal (or straight out bm according to some).

so, if anything, thurston has been listening to bm since it started.

mil_pl 04.18.2008 02:08 AM

thurston have tattoo on his arm, what it is ? just a cross ?

Ewwwwww? Why ewwww? I don't doubt that a master like TM can listen to all different kinds of music as long as they're good. Have you heard anything labeled as black metal? I can listen easily to Sonic Youth and then Wolves in the Throne Room, for example. That's the beauty about music...

thats the sonic life cross my dear friend.

man i dont get this black metal thing. i checked out immortal (i saw t wearing an immortal tee shirt so i thought id check it out) and theyre truly shite. how can thurston be into that shit?
and also those people used to kill people and all that.. i really hate music where people take themselves to serious and bm is truly one of those kinds.

whorefrost 04.18.2008 08:13 AM

He's certainly been busy on ebay scooping up black metal T's and CDs

atsonicpark 04.18.2008 08:46 AM

Who DOESN'T like Black Metal? There are MANY MANY interesting things to enjoy within the black metal genre. Thurston has an eclectic taste in music, good for him.

um actually there are plenty of those who don't like black metal, like there are obviously people who don't like jazz, rock, classical, opera, country and so and so forth... i'm not saying i dislike black metal i have heard bad and good stuff like in all genres of music.

Venom is pretty awesome and i remember celtic frost back when i was jr. high school, but i didn't like them and heard them again recently and i still don't really find it that good.

hiland 04.18.2008 11:08 AM

ha... at work the other day... the first "black metal" porno came in used. i had to watch it.... Phallusifer

batreleaser 04.18.2008 11:37 AM

wow, thats awesome. thurston really does have rad taste (despite the crap thats been getting signed to ecstatic peace lately). black metal is amazing. everything from ultra brutal darkthrone (transylvanian hunger is my favorite black metal record ever) to burzum. to a sonic youth fan trying to get into black metal id definitley reccomend burzum's anthology. some of his shit could seriously be on warp or something.

and scott v, chill. atsonicpark was not making a completley literal statement. he was saying that there is lots of things to like about black metal.

He does? Ive been contemplating getting that myself for a while now and i had no idea, problem is i have blonde hair so if i had that tattoo as well id just look like a total copycat... if only to the few people who even know about said tattoo. I always liked it because its a nice subtle image.

Anyway, black metal... yeah....

Pretty much my thought, as well.

atsonicpark 04.18.2008 05:23 PM

I wrote my reply before I even saw what you'd written scott v.

My whole point is, to any close minded people that MAY post replies on this thread: I just don't see how someone could say "I hate that genre of music." about ANY genre. There's good shit in every genre, and there's more good shit in the black metal genre than the early-90's alterna-Dinosaur Jr bullshit most people worship on here.

I don't think anyone is being close-minded if they simply don't like something. I don't like pickles. I've tried pickles, yes, but.... not for me.

avantgarde1 04.18.2008 05:30 PM

i've listened to a good amount of metal period... and i just dont' like it. so i think i can safely say i pretty much can't stand that entire genre... at least what i've heard up to this point in my life. i find it (metal and most of it's sub-genres) kinda corny to be honest w/ ya. although i do find GWAR hilarious.

atsonicpark 04.18.2008 05:31 PM

I guess my thing is, I think a lot of people here write things off without, y'know, bothering to listen to it. For example, I'll mention TOOL; automatically, visions of some idiot pothead 13 year old in a Lateralus shirt saying "fuck god!" comes in a lot of Sonic Gossip member's mind. Okay, understandable. But that overlooks the amazing artist and musical contributions that band has added to the world of popular music, right? Right.

Same with black metal. "Man, it has to suck, look at the people who like that! Look at the IMAGERY of it! It's a joke!" Who knows what people think? My point is, if you care about music, you know actual MUSICALITY, you wouldn't completely write off black metal. Almost every black metal band you'll hear has written some of the greatest metal riffs ever just as a prerequisite. I'm not a huge fan of all the imagery or the production or perhaps the band members, but talking about the music, it's usually in top form. Everyone here should at least check out Dodheimsgard.

atsonicpark 04.18.2008 05:32 PM

And again, that reply was written before I read the previous two replies.

But yeah... There's nothing wrong with not liking something. But people should give everything a chance. My point is, people can still listen to black metal and get SOMETHING out of it, even if it's not, as a whole, something they love. There's still at least going to be some amazing riffs or drumming or whatever. Something to enjoy. I listen to all types of music -- even music I don't think I'll necessarily love; I'm shocked that sometimes I end up liking something when I don't think I'm going to. Even if I don't like it, I always try to walk away from the experience with SOMETHING good to say about what I just listened to. People may write off C'N'C Music Factory, but dammit they have some of the best beats you'll ever hear. Just sayin'.

Pessimist 04.18.2008 05:34 PM

The riffs ARE pretty tight.

atsonicpark 04.18.2008 05:45 PM

Haha, there you go :)

I just hope that people can find something enjoyable -- at least one thing -- with everything in life. It'll make thier life a little easier. For example, I hate most country music, but I can get into the slide guitar work in a lot of that stuff. I hate most rap, but the beats or some of the lyrics are usually okay.

avantgarde1 04.18.2008 06:28 PM

for you adam i'll say one nice thing about metal... meshuggah (spelling?) put on a good show and are very talented... but i just can't dig it.

Everyneurotic 04.18.2008 06:54 PM

meshuggah were good ten years ago.

atsonicpark 04.18.2008 07:53 PM

You know who's a really good metal band I've been "diggin on" lately? UNEXPECT.

Everyneurotic 04.19.2008 03:03 PM

unexpect: like koenjihyakkei covering manowar.

yeah, they are great.

vulva 04.19.2008 05:30 PM

I don't get all this black metal hate going on. I guess the mistake is people just listening to the mainstream black metal bands, who can be pretty subpar. Ignore shit like Immortal right now. If you want genuinely good black metal you should check out the likes of Darkthrone, Craft, Gallhammer, Arcturus, and so on. There's plenty of great black metal out there, but much like every genre the great stuff is found floating in a sea of mediocrity

avantgarde1 04.19.2008 08:16 PM

another post by diesel that's makes no sense to me what so ever... awesome.

scott v 04.19.2008 09:48 PM

atsonicpark you have some good points...
i think for the most part i obviously and admittedly steered away from black metal because of the IMAGARY, and that was a mistake because for some of what i've heard the music is tight and interesting in doses like nearly all music, i'm still not too fond of the vocal inflections in this sorta stuff, its an acquired taste, but i was listening the Beherit and there is some interesting vocalizations and mixing and overdubbing of the vocals that sound pretty wild and cool.

GWAR should be an area of outstanding natural beauty. Maybe with sick-coloured plaques marking their homes.

Anyway, does Thurston really have the "Sonic Life" cross as a tatoo?

atsonicpark 04.20.2008 02:05 AM

Heheh, yeah, the vocals are an acquired taste, but ... the biggest problem with most black metal is the production is just so, SO awful.

But honestly, Mayhem.. one of the best bands ever.
