what SY song do you love to play with your guitar or other instrument?

i have this weird hobby: i'm a self-taught bass player. and i'm learning the bass lines from "rather ripped", and my favourite by now it's " helen lundeberg". a great noisy-funky bass line from kim "kool thing"...other great bass line it's the instrumental "the good and the bad" from the first album.

Silver rocket.
Me and my friend play it and see how far gone we can take the song and still bring it back to music.

And the diamond sea is great fun to improvise with.

fluxequalsrad 06.24.2008 12:42 PM

Karenology. Thurston/Lee/Jim's parts are all equally fun to play.

viewtiful_alan 06.24.2008 12:44 PM

Oh and welcome to the board diskaholic.

noisereductions 06.24.2008 12:55 PM

"Schizophrenia," "Kotton Krown," "Sunday" and the 'boys-go-to-jupiter..." part of "Nevermind"

viewtiful_alan 06.24.2008 12:57 PM

Schizophrenia is fun. If easy.

Cantankerous 06.24.2008 12:58 PM

i don't play other people's songs very often but i love playing kotton krown and sugar kane

oh but i love the bass parts for sister and daydream nation songs

atsonicpark 06.24.2008 01:01 PM

cross the breeze... and skip tracer.

viewtiful_alan 06.24.2008 01:03 PM

Kind of off topic but can anybody help me out with burning spear..?
I'm having a hard time with the drum stick patterns (which way he hits it, when etc.)

HECKLER SPRAY 06.24.2008 01:16 PM

Catholic Block, Stereo sanctity, Tuff Gnarl, Expressway to your Skull,... are nice to play on drums.

acousticrock87 06.24.2008 01:21 PM

I can't bother myself to retune my guitar often enough to play Sonic Youth, but when I do: Candle and Silver Rocket.

viewtiful_alan 06.24.2008 01:22 PM

You can play silver rocket in standard tuning pretty easily.

✌➬ 06.24.2008 01:24 PM

I don't play, I suck at guitar.

Hhaha the pete and pete intro song is an indie rock classic

not really. it depends on how you play the a-minor chord. If you play the open shape it sounds like shit yeah.
But otherwise it sounds essentially the way it does in their tuning.

Polaris! My dad actually saw the lead singer play a live solo show in Glasgow.

Green Magnesium 06.24.2008 05:41 PM

At Christmastime I play the Bad Moon Rising album on my grandmother's antique organ while the rest of the family sings along.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.24.2008 06:11 PM

stones and sunday

viewtiful_alan 06.24.2008 06:15 PM

Yeah sunday is so easy yet amazing to play, its one of those songs that sounds great with just one guitar.

atsonicpark 06.24.2008 06:16 PM

yes, my sonic youth covers are limited to the style, usually i am playing them on an acoustic, so the tuning cant be too far from standard, so I play most of 1000 leaves and Sonic Nurse, thurston parts, cuz they are essentially rhythm tracks. though my true favorite is to get on my amplifier and play the early 90s live versions of Schizophrenia too fucking loud for my neighborhood..

Sonic Youth 37 06.24.2008 09:06 PM

Brother James, Kill Yr Idols, Mildred Pierce, Silver Rocket, and when I'm feeling like damaging my hands and guitar, Burning Spear.

tasteinmen 06.24.2008 09:54 PM

I find that in order to play a sy song, another guitar needs to be present and so does bass, so usually i play along to their songs which involves shadow of a doubt, brave men run, starpower, pacific coast highway and expressway.

Death & the Maiden 06.25.2008 01:29 AM

Teen Age Riot (I was planning to do a cover of this when I formed a band)
Candle
Tom Violence
Inhuman

SYRFox 06.25.2008 04:53 AM

The only I ever played was Brother James, on my piano. You can hear it on Sonic Gossip Comp Vol 1

acousticrock87 06.25.2008 04:56 AM

Trying to play "100%" is proof that no matter how easy a SY song is, I can never play it like they do.

Brother James would sound sweet on piano.

you and nobody will play like they do...and i think that it's a waste of time...just be yourself
("kill your idols")

deflinus 06.25.2008 02:52 PM

guitar: unmade bed, cross the breeze, rain on tin, dripping dream

drums: dripping dream, unmade bed, teenage riot, all of rather ripped

Andrés 06.26.2008 11:59 PM

Tunic, Beauty Lies...

[Sandbag] 06.28.2008 01:18 PM

i enjoy playing 'murray street', the whole thing, since it's all in the same tune. with the right amounts of effects and distortion... :)
i love guitar-wanking at the end of Karen Revisited and the middle part in Becuz... or the final part in 'washing machine'... mixing drone+delay+drumsticks across the strings

sonic youth's songs are good for jammin' over :)

al shabbray 07.19.2008 10:55 AM

theresas soundworld. just beautiful and really easy to play....its a musical mantra I think

Absolutely! Nothing beats Ghost Bitch in front of a warm fire with a glass of egg nog.

Magic Wheel Memory 07.19.2008 05:58 PM

Guitar: Cotton Crown and Total Trash
Bass: Theresa's Sound World
Freezer: Freezer Burn

pbradley 07.19.2008 06:06 PM

Expressway is the only Sonic Youth song I've played.

I would like to play I'm Insane with some people, though. Read off the poetry.

atari 2600 07.19.2008 06:09 PM

learned Kool Thing by ear after seeing the F#F#F#F#EB tuning listed in Guitar Player when Thurston won Guitarist of the Year...this was before CL made it ez, well, relatively...

frades 07.25.2008 07:49 AM

2004 -- EG#EG#EG# (Paper Cup Exit, PCH, Expressway)
2005 -- EG#EG#EG# (Paper Cup Exit, PCH, Expressway)
2006 -- EG#EG#EG# (PCH, Expressway) & GABDEG (Boston 2006 - Teenage Riot)

It's Pacific Coast Highway. Funny how three of those songs make some sort of reference to a road. That must their "road song tuning."
