WTF was with Kimmel show??

Were their cameramen told 'show Lee as little as possible, he makes the band look old'. The poor dude had about 3 seconds of screen time during the whole performance...otherwise...really FUCKING SLICK!!!

noisemachine 07.12.2006 11:16 AM

Did the camera guy really say that?
I didn't see it on TV, but I was there in the audience but towards the back. It was a lot of fun and they ended up playing 9 songs I think.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.12.2006 11:23 AM

9?
I thought they always did 1 or 2

noisemachine 07.12.2006 11:25 AM

They televised two but they played 9.
They played:

Incinerate
Reena
What a Waste
Rats
Rapture
Catholic Block
Jams Run Free
Pink Steam
Shaking Hell

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.12.2006 11:26 AM

sounds like a good set

noisemachine 07.12.2006 11:33 AM

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It turned out well because before the show, the staff people were saying that since they were gonna be taping extra segments for the show or whatever that people were gonna have to choose between seeing the studio portion of the show and seeing Sonic Youth, but there was a small chance that people in the studio would be able to see both. So I decided to gamble and sit in the studio, and sure enough in the end we get to see both. So it was an awesome night...
seeing Lance Armstrong, Tracy Morgan, Shaun Alexander and Danica Patrick (who is freaking hot) and Sonic Youth!

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.12.2006 11:37 AM

Sounds awesome, I missed the show. Forgot about it.

mooger_fooger 07.12.2006 11:48 AM

Now, I can't say the camermen were TOLD that, I'm just speculating.. LOL sounds like it was a really good show, the televised portion was flippin' amazing

soniknirve 07.12.2006 11:57 AM

it's obvious that no one had any idea who sonic youth were. the camera was on thurston 95% of the time. they prob thought he was a solo artist and everyone else was part of his back up band. fucking clueless tards...

That's cool, I was wondering how many songs they played.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.12.2006 12:30 PM

whos this guy in the yellow ive been seeing a lot?

foldback 07.12.2006 12:32 PM

They sounded pretty good again, but TV focusing on the singer and no one else really isn't anything new, sadly.

Also, guy in the yellow shirt = Pavement alum Mark Ibold

mooger_fooger 07.12.2006 12:32 PM

Thurston Moore AND Sonic Youth LOL

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.12.2006 12:33 PM

oh.

val-holla-ing 07.12.2006 12:34 PM

you mean thurston moore and THE sonic youthS.

thank you london!

Tokolosh 07.12.2006 12:48 PM

That song sounds better everytime I hear it. Nice setlist.

finding nobody 07.12.2006 02:09 PM

the songs verses were cut short. i liked letterman better

i was expecting a small audience like a late night show. but this was like a concert. there was no chance at all of hearing kegmama

kingcoffee 07.12.2006 02:40 PM

I hate Jimmy Kimmel.

kingcoffee 07.12.2006 02:41 PM

I don't really like it when bands play the same song twice on separate tv appearances. It bores me. I thought they should have played something other than Incinerate. Maybe Rats. Give Lee some goddamn tv time. It;s always Thurston or Kim. lee writes songs too, guys!

mooger_fooger 07.12.2006 03:08 PM

Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and The Sonic Youth E-Street Band :)

scott v 07.12.2006 03:19 PM

during the televised segment, due to time constraints I like how they cut out of Reena half way thru the song... that's shitty... i remember how that happened once before back in 1994 when SY appeared on the John Stewart Show and the Starfield Road was cut at the end of the program.

the camera work was abit less than typical, they had a large focus on whoever was singing the song which is expected but they had soe interesting angles but the timing to cut from one camera to the next was kinda poorly done... especially during incinerate during the guitar dualing/solo section the flipped from kim to steve and then thurston with no lee???

yeah again little lee...

i taped the broaddcast because i was busy witnessing and recording the most splendid Vampire Belt gig... Corsano and Nace kill, see them if you can and buy their plastic...

Yeah, but most times when bands appear on late night shows they do one song only anyways. I really like the whole outdoor summer concert series idea. I would go a lot more if I lived closer to Hollywood.

kingcoffee 07.12.2006 07:36 PM

I thought that the camera takes on the band were pretty poor. I liked the angles, but their timing was way off. During the "solo" of Incinerate when Thurston slides his hand up the neck to create that high, squeeky sound, the cameraman cuts to Steve???????!!!!!!! Bad idea. Just goes to show you that the producers/cameramen on the show didn't really care about the band enough to know the song and plan out the camera shots ahead of time.

kingcoffee 07.12.2006 07:39 PM

Also, there was very little Lee. Plenty of Kim camera time, who doesn't have as much to do with the song as Lee, yet they show her more. I mean, come on, Lee is the strongest guitarist in SY and a vital member who helped shape SY's sound as much as Thurston and Kim, if not more so. Perhaps because Kim looks younger than Lee? She still has a great body and from a certain distance, she still looks like she's in her early 30's. Lee is noticabley late-midddle-aged with his graying hair.

Kim looks great, but unless you're blind, there's no way she looks like she's in her early 30's.
