I don't really like using fractions of numbers. Kind of defeats the purpose of giving a score out of ten. You may as well do it out of 100, just remove the decimal.

You missed 'Bubblegum' out or was that on purpose because it's only on the rerelease or somthing.

And you missed 'Marilyn Moore'.

I think this is probably my second favourite Sonic Youth album.

Tom Violence 9.5
Shadow of a Doubt 10
Star Power 9
In the Kingdom #19 9
Green Light 9
Death to our Friends 8
Secret Girl 9
Marilyn Moore 8
Expressway to yr Skull 9
Bubble Gum 7

I might change my mind on this or do it out of 100. EDIT thats more accurate i think

I kinda agree with you kinda don't.

When I was in college I went through a period of coming home absolutely knackered, so I would always lie on my bed and listen to either this album or washing machine. As I lay there I would drift off into a kind of half sleep, very much helped by the outro of Expressway and then bubblegum would suddenly burst in and I would be shocked awake. That happened so many times, it's a great album to fall alseep to.

Asim 09.02.2006 03:25 PM

yeah, Expressway is like SY's second best song. Top 10 song.

Yeah, that happens to me and that's one of the reasons I hate the song. It just ruins the album as a whole, but you can always just stop your CD player before it comes on.

Maybe five or six months ago, my computer was busted, so to keep myself alive at night while I finished my homework, I'd listen to this. Save for a few, this has the best sequencing. Starpower fades into In The Kingdom, which is pure genius, going from that red love song to a pitch black horror movie. But then! Green Light. I always fell asleep right after that- something about T's vocals. It's another hazy love song. I'd give it an 88/100. I never cared for Tom Violence or Marilyn Moore. I programmed my player to skip them. I like the lyrics, but eh.

Asim 09.03.2006 01:41 AM

Marilyn Moore plays like a hangover, which is really great for music. I think the song was written by Lydia Lunch too, which explains it. Tom Violence is on of the songs that make SY an ideal band for older teens, mainly because of the lyrics of songs like that and Green Light.

krastian 09.03.2006 04:40 AM

Tom Fucking Violence is a great opener......the album is in my top 3 SY albums or whatever.

I think Bubblegum is a decent song but it ruins the mood. The vinyl is way better then the cd because
1. It sounds better
2. Expressway To Yr. Skull loops at the end and in order to make it stop you have to physically remove it

Asim 09.03.2006 11:27 AM

Out of their 80's it's DDN > EVOL > CIS > Sister >>> BMR

BMR is kinda charming, but it's really obnoxious, and obnoxious being a bad thing for SY is really bad because SY is probably at their best when they're obnoxious (see Rain King).

CIS is their most charming record, not that it's the best. They couldn't quite articulate what they would in the EVOL - DDN but the songs are just amazing, it's all noisy pop, and atleasy 7/9 songs on CIS are > 9.1 but overall it's a 10.0 record like EVOL or DDN

Sister is definetly around 9.5 but it doesn't reach the perfectiong of the other albums, but it does well enough to be an outstanding album, one of the best albums of the 80's still; kind of like a worse Smiths record.

and to say something I didn't about EVOL already Expressway is completely amazing because of how it relieves you after a few tense dark songs (bar the first 5 songs).

btw I wonder what average people find more inaccessible, original Sonic Youth EP or BMR.

schizophrenicroom 09.03.2006 11:46 AM

asim- bmr is more inaccessible. the ep is really easy to sit down with. the drums are funky, and the production's more clear. bmr is something i have to be in the mood to listen to.

Gainsbarre 09.03.2006 12:29 PM

I just listened to BMR and am almost thru EVOL.

God I love these fucking records!

Gainsbarre 09.03.2006 12:32 PM

Expressway...

It's almost painful to listen to it's so great...

The vinyl is where it's at, but I still like Bubblegum gotdammit!

Anyone a fan of "Outrageous" where Bubblegum originates from?

satirejohn 09.03.2006 02:41 PM

aha! maybe my favourite album ever!

Tom Violence - 10 (best song on the album)
Shadow of a Doubt - 10
Starpower - 9.9
In the Kingdom #19 - 8.5
Green Light - 8
Death to our Friends - 9
Secret Girl - 9.5
Marilyn Moore - 9
Expressway to Yr Skull - 10
Bubblegum - 6 (it's okay, but definately doesnt fit the album and shouldn't be included)

satirejohn 09.03.2006 02:41 PM

Starpower probably should be a ten'er also....

CHOUT 09.03.2006 05:19 PM

Listening to EVOL for the first time was one of the most magical listening-to-an-album-for-the-first-time experiences ever. I felt immediately connected to it.

How would, say, 8.5 out of 10 be more accurate than 85 out of a 100???

Lurker 09.04.2006 11:36 AM

I didn't say it would be more accurate, that was referring to somthing else. I changed my scores.

it's a lock-in groove at the end. how annoying. i have an L7 single that does that as well.
you don't actually have to pull the arm up, you can just press the stop button.

DoubleNickels 09.04.2006 01:26 PM

When I was ripping all my CDs to digital (Yeah yeah I know, shut up) I left Bubblegum off the album because I felt it ruined the flow so bad.

Cantankerous 09.04.2006 01:36 PM

i think it's great, it's like a little surprise at the end of expwy. in fact, i like their version much better than the kim fowley version.
