Half of American young people have tattoos

In fact, 49 percent of Americans ages 18 to 29 have tattoos, according to a 2004 Harris Poll. A study recently published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology indicated 24 percent of people ages 18 to 50 have at least one tattoo. The study, based on a survey of 500 people in the United States, noted tattoos in past years "became associated with marginalized groups, signaling time spent in jail, punk status, membership in a motorcycle gang or a traveling circus." But now, it said, tattoos "have become increasingly eclectic, and the practice has become mainstream."
There are even children's books like "Mommy Has a Tattoo" and the "Tattoo Coloring Book." The topic of tattoos and body piercing is one of the hottest for campus speakers. Major corporations are working the "hip" new trend into their TV commercials and ad campaigns. And as tattoos and piercings become more common, some zealots are moving to extremes once unthinkable.
Just as "Heather Has Two Mommies" is now required reading for kindergartners in some school districts, how long will it be before the tolerance police mandate Phil Padwe's new books. He's the author and illustrator of the two new children's books on tattoos. In "Mommy Has a Tattoo," a little boy, James, is afraid of a heavily tattooed neighbor – until he realizes his mother has one, too.

Another recent study concluded that half of all teenagers nowadays have either a tattoo or a piercing or both.

k-krack 10.23.2006 04:24 PM

I can proudly say that I am not of that 50%.

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:24 PM

atari 2600 10.23.2006 04:27 PM

Wow, one non-idiot and one idiot that is trying to change their idiotic ways have posted replies thus far.

You can count me among the number without any piercings or tattoos.

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:28 PM

i'm not paying for it so i really don't fucking care.

Savage Clone 10.23.2006 04:29 PM

I have no regrets.
That's how it works when you put a modicum of consideration into your decisions.

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:32 PM

it's not to say that i've 'learned a lesson', because i wouldn't be getting it done if the ink hadn't fucked up.

gmku 10.23.2006 04:33 PM

At least half of American older adults have huge warts. It's a fact, Jack!

"The weirder you're going to behave, the more normal you should look. It works in reverse, too. When I see a kid with green hair and three or four rings in his nose, I know there is absolutely nothing extraordinary about that person." -- P. J. O'Rourke

I sort of half agree with him.

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:35 PM

i don't have green hair (anymore) or ANY rings in my nose (anymore.)

Me, too. I totally freaked out everybody at work today. I'm wearing a blue button-down shirt, a tie, creased gabardine pants, and a brown sports coat. I look so freaking professional I scare even myself.

As if there is something extraordinary about a kid wearing dockers and carrying a Grisham book? Fashion taste is just fashion taste. People can be boring no matter what they look like (everyone knows this), and O'Rourke is just trying to be provocative.

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:40 PM

as per usual.

gmku 10.23.2006 04:41 PM

I'm probably like the most normal looking guy in the world. Like Charlie Brown. A Charlie Brown who goes into a record store and comes out with albums that have pictures of Blood, Guts and Pussy on their covers.

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:42 PM

DWARVES!

Savage Clone 10.23.2006 04:42 PM

Yeah, people who pose for photos sporting suspenders and cigars are WAY more out there! Watch out, he might have a bow tie to bust out next! What a crazy guy!

Cantankerous 10.23.2006 04:43 PM

he's even crazier than you, wormhole.

gmku 10.23.2006 04:45 PM

The Dwarves are god. But they must die.

I am afraid of needles, but I would get one, but I get bored easily with things and would want to redo it constantly and you can not really change it.

Jico 10.23.2006 05:38 PM

alteredcourse 10.23.2006 06:51 PM

believing something as black and white as "the weirder you look, the more dull and/or unintelligent you must be on the inside" is probably the most shallow and self-preserving thing ive heard in a long time :p

I propose a death match between you two. Barbarism begins at home.

terminal pharmacy, I decree thee as a Duke.

Your use of logic is most impressive.

Who said that?

!@#$%! 10.23.2006 07:42 PM

this is all too funny

i don't have any tattoos, i had some ear piercings nothing too radical i no longer use them

if that article blah blah blah...

the only piercing i would find "objectionable" in a place of work is the tongue one. of course that varies from place of work to place of work.

but when i see a tongue piercing all i can think of is that tongue sucking my dick really hard, as if it were a mango pit. very distracting during meetings.
