"Trilogy" Sonic Youth Style

Glanced upon The Cure's "Trilogy" DVD sitting on my table and thought wouldn't it be great if SY did a gig just like that? (play an album in its entirety, in order from start to finish)

What do you guys think? which albums would suit that sort of gig? Albums where the order of the tracks are brilliantly laid and where there's an element (eg sound, type of songs, etc) that makes it A great album (and not just becoz it has 2 of your favorite songs in them)!

For me I would pick Daydream Nation, NYCGF

sy2004 05.16.2006 09:55 AM

Daydream Nation should be in it for sure, not for a few tracks but for the complete album.

Washing Machine, Sister or Murray Street

fishmonkey 05.16.2006 10:47 AM

washing machine, straight off, i love the way that album is layed out, starting with becuz and ending with the diamond sea and all the juicy tit-bits in between

PunkerViolence 05.16.2006 11:30 AM

Yeah washing machine, and sister.

Fox 05.16.2006 11:58 AM

Confusion is Sex, Bad Moon Rising, EVOL

m^a(t)h 05.16.2006 02:17 PM

they would obviously play Daydream Nation and that would be great...

scott v 05.16.2006 03:10 PM

unlikely that they do something like this... i think i read a recent interview where they actually did turn the offer down.

i'd like to hear them do a pre-DGC album but boy do they even remember how to play half of those songs, half are regular live mainstays whle the other half seem to be forgotten into the wind.

anyways on a similar note i read on a Forced Exposure new releases update that the Melvins just released a live version of the entire Houdini album.

i think just about anything performed live in it's entirety by sonic youth would be awwesome. i wouldn't really want to see NYC Ghosts & Flowers live though..

alyasa 05.16.2006 05:56 PM

Yeah just about anything would be good. Actually CIS + KYI would be very, very interesting, especially with all the tricks they have up their sleeve now. Wonder if they could actually make it new... Like that french radio station thing, for RR, le mouv? They played Shaking Hell, and said this one's so old, it's new, or something. :)

noisemachine 05.16.2006 08:02 PM

Daydream Nation would be my first choice. Sister would be great too although it would be a bit short...
Other good could be: Washing Machine, Goo and Dirty (although many of you will disagree with that one).

noisemachine 05.16.2006 08:09 PM

Oh, or they could also just do a concert where they only play "Trilogy" and stretch it out to a few hours!

Daycare Nation 05.16.2006 08:28 PM

My first choice would be Made in USA

GL-JC 05.19.2006 10:02 AM

Yeah I think Washing Machine would be a good choice too! In my opinion, that album is a good representation of Sonic Youth past and present

satirejohn 05.19.2006 11:26 AM

The Cure trilogy is three albums. How about this:

EVOL
Sister
Daydream Nation

who wouldn't die to experience that?

max 05.19.2006 05:35 PM

i personally dislike this idea big time, mainly becuz i can't stand most of the CURE material. why should they leave out of the setlist a bunch of cool stuff they have made? i mean, every album has great stuff on. i like the fact that when you hear a SY live you actually have a chance to see their music actually BLENDING together, old and new put together... it amazes me.

GL-JC 05.19.2006 06:57 PM

With regard to Max's post, I guess it depends on what one think the function of an "album" should be.
I prefer to view an album as 1 big piece of art rather than a collection of 10 different art pieces. or else, what's the point of releasing an album? it would be more relevant to release 10 singles. Think that in this day and age of MP3s and downloads, the art of the album have sadly been lost. we are listening to songs that we want and skipping the songs that the artist find relevant to put in the album.
And becoz stuff like Daydream Nation is such amazing listen from start to finish, I don't think I'll mind a single bit if they play a whole gig based on that album!
But hey, I do agree some of The Cure's stuff are a bit iffy!

max 05.21.2006 06:59 AM

well it's all cool GL, actually I totally agree with you, an album actually represents a collection of moments... instants of lives... put together, to represent the mood of that whole time frame.

Actually my fave bands usually are those who have been able to put out an album - or more than one - which I can just play throughly without skipping any songs.

that's the perfect album to me. but that's why it's on a disc... I mean - it's kinda senseless to try and put out a show trying to catch that momentum which is obviously impossible... cuz it belongs to the past...

sorry I'm such a weirdo... :)

oh yeah screw THE CURE ahah :D (naah, they obviously have good stuff. but... not my cup of tea)
