RAP

been banging the WU-TANG for a few months straight. it is hard to listen to any other rap because it all falls short in comparision. 36 Chambers over and over and over.

but for the sake of general rap discussion I'll kick some off (mostly Wu related of course)

the newest Ghostface CD is hot, um I havent gotten the newest Wu-Tang joint yet but I listened to it at borders and it kinda sucks. I found this sick mash up called "Wu Orleans" that is Wu and Wu affiliates mashed with Louis Armstrong and other ragtime type music. Masta Killa is really got mad flow, but the beats on his CD arent real strong, still highly listenable. Currently borrowing Liquid Swords from a friend, the first 3 songs are great but the rest leaves a little to be desired... "snort cocaine, to act the same" level plain and something about a brain... that shit just loops in my head forever.

listened to some NWA yesterday, used to be way into that but after really digging into the Wu-Tang its realy hard to listen to that lame shit. Still Ice Cube and Easy demand my respect, I have got a few of their tapes.

Any Gravediggaz recommendations? I watched some videos on youtube and I would definatly like to find some records. As far as solo Wu goes I am pretty much just way into Ghostface, but there is alot I havent heard. Raekwons work on 36 Chambers is amazing so I am eagerly wanting to check him out, esspecially since Cuban Linx has Ghost on it alot, their duet "Can It Be That It Was All So Simple" is sooooooo killer. "Kickin the fly cliches and making duets with Rae and A just happens to make my day". Cuban Linx II dropping soon .... ?

screamingskull 02.27.2008 06:33 AM

i like De La Soul and a couple of Jurassic 5 songs but as for Rap music thats about it, i do remember one Wu Tang song from a while back, it was pretty good.

I will search for it on youtube.

_slavo_ 02.27.2008 07:05 AM

geez, this is like 47th thread on hip hop all the way.

Wu Tang 36 chambers still slays big time though. This and Ready to Die by Biggie Smalls.

A Thousand Threads 02.27.2008 07:23 AM

although nobody gives a shit
i have to post it again

EXISTEREO

this dude fucking rocks.
double-time over trashy beats

batreleaser 02.27.2008 07:38 AM

the new ghostface is garbage in comparison with his other records\

gravediggaz-graveyard classics & the sickel and the shovel

and there are far more good hip hop alblums than just wu, listen to mf doom, big l, lil wayne, j dilla, biggie, nas, company flow, el-p, and cannibal ox for starters.

RdTv 02.27.2008 07:38 AM

The new Wu-Tang sucks. The new Ghostface is good. Talib Kweli-Eardrum is good. The ''Thes-One'' solo album is good. Asheru and Blue Black is really good. Liquid Swords is a classic throughout the whole album.I highly suggest you listen to it more. Listen to '' Operation Doomsday'' by MF Doom, it has a very Wu-esque feel to it, both lyrically and musically. J-Dilla donuts. You must listen to J-Dilla donuts. ODB - Return to the 36 chambers is also a classic. Nobody came close to ODB's style and originality on that first album. A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory, if you haven't listened to a lot of ATCQ, or if you heard some stuff and you didn't like it, listen to this album. And there is nothing lame about NWA, nothing.

atsonicpark 02.27.2008 07:45 AM

Rap's very very OKAY in small doses.Love the first Gravediggaz album, the first Eminem album, some Anticon shit, some Luda, some DMX, and of course 36 Chambers is the best rap album ever. That's about it. It's just boring after a while.

jimbrim 02.27.2008 08:44 AM

MF Doom, Edan, El-p, Gang Starr, and Insight are my faves.

Rob Instigator 02.27.2008 09:44 AM

Eric B & rakim
Gangstarr
PUBLIC ENEMY
Slick Rick The Ruler
A Tribe Called Quest

those are my faves

Toilet & Bowels 02.27.2008 09:45 AM

i'm a bit bored of 36 chambers, i prefer wu-tang forever.
the first gravediggaz record "6 feet deep" is the one to go for.
and to say all other hiphop falls short of wu-tang probably just means you don't like hiphop very much

Would agree if Wu-Tang Forever were trimmed to look thusly:

Reunited
For Heaven's Sake
Visionz
As High As Wu-Tang Get
It's Yourz
Triumph
Impossible
The MGM
Duck Seazon
Hellz Wind Staff

Not to say every other track is ass (well, there is "Black Shampoo") but
imagine that tracklisting on a single disc.

black shampoo is the worst wu-tang song. i like how rza says that he's not doing any r&b shit, but then u-god makes a shitty r&b song.

batreleaser 02.27.2008 01:46 PM

i love hip hop just as much as any other music. when i was younger (15-16) it had to be indie, punk , metal, or bust. but as i got older i started to realized that theres so much great music jazz especially, pop, hip hop, folk, i love everything. a great example i think is hisham bharoocha, or all of black dice for that matter. they all started out as a noise based cross over thrash brutal as fuck band, then by creature comforts they expanded their sound to include ambient electronics, hip hop, psychedlia, and they do it well. i love bands who start out as brutal noise but then moprhy more and more as theuir careers go on. i was lookin at hisham's myspace, and he names artists from literally every artist imaginable, and thats really inspring to me.

batreleaser 02.27.2008 01:48 PM

and by the way, wu tang is briliant pure and simple. i see rza the same way i see people like brian wilson, eno, aphex twin, or kevin shields, just brilliant soundsmith, abstsract, electic, but he just comes from a different background. look at the list of records hes responsible for; 36 chambers, return to the 36 chambers, liquid swords, ironman, cuban linx, tical, thats the best catalog of any artist in hip hop, fuck it, thats better than most musicians of any genre, period.

batreleaser 02.27.2008 02:03 PM

other good ones:

early mobb deep
three 6 mafia (everything up to most known unkown, their last good and best record)
kanye west (hes great trust me, one of the few pop stars who's records get more experimental with each release)
public enemy (obviously, hip hop noise)
dalek (the most obtuse and strange hip hop around, equally influenced by public enemy, rza, godflesh, and my bloody valentine)
a tribe called quest
madlib (especially quasimoto)
clipse (there have been three hip hop records this decade which have truly blown minds, and will go down as some of the best records of out time, ghostface-fishscale, madvillian-madvilliany, and clipse-hell hath no fury, even thurston moore himself loves this.)
the new jay z in all honesty is pretty tight (american gangster)
one be lo (seriously the most slept on mc around right now)
digitial underground (when tupac was an art student weirdo, before he became a thug street poet art student hostile)
phaoroh monch (his record that came out last year was quite dope)
roots (illadelph halflife, everything after that is, meh)
lootpack (great stoned out old school revival shit, madlib's first group)
bone thugs n harmony (the great singing rap thugs, they played last night in tucson and i forgot to go, i heard they were great too)
scarface (legendary, he did this track with ghostface a couple years back which might be my favorite hip hop song ever, seriously)
outkast (early stuff, aquemini especially, bombs over baghdad was a great track but they got overrated as fuck when stankokia came out)
goodie mob (southern fried, blunted, spritial hip hop courtest of ceelo greens first group)
ultramagnetic mc's (kool keith before he went into outerspace, but was still talented as fuck)
dizzee rascal (even though him and the grime scene got overhyped as fuck by pitchfork a few years back, dizzee is raw as fuck and has lyrics to blow your mind, he just got signed to defjux in the states and hes a full grown man now, he is going to dominate)
dead prez (its bigger than hip hop)
cam'ron (purple haze, thats about it, amazing record, in the top 5 of this decade, but after that hes just a womanizing shmoe whos homies turned theur backs on him and forgot how to flow)
beanie siegel (underrated, his track on the new ghostface is the best in the record)

thats enough, i seriously just went through my ipod to get all those down for you.

Sonic Youth 37 02.27.2008 03:32 PM

What about Clipse? Have they been mentioned yet. This is some of the very little rap I can listen to almost regularly. Lord Willin' has some of the best beats I've ever heard. Like "Grindin" and "Virginia"

Everyneurotic 02.27.2008 03:36 PM

i don't see the appeal of clipse, i thought they sounded like chingy and every other commercial shitty rapper.

Toilet & Bowels 02.27.2008 03:38 PM

i would say that dj premier and the bomb squad have better production track records than the rza

Derek 02.27.2008 03:52 PM

GZA/The Genius's Liquid Swords is like the best rap album ever.

Disgruntled Youth 02.27.2008 04:50 PM

The New Pete Rock is a banger
Chandons solo shit is tough
Sean Price-Jesus Price superstar is on some gritty comedic shit

peep these albums

uhler 02.27.2008 05:09 PM

from now on, anytime i have a chance to post this album cover i'm going to.

yes i mentioned them, hell hath no fury is one of the top 3 rap records of the decade, along with ghostface's fishscale and madvillian, and thurston reps them as well, but i already said that alreaud

dude, chingy? you must not have been listenin to the same clipse cuz theyre lyrics are extremly obtuse and extremly dark and extremly dark meditations on street/crime life, chingy just talks about bein a baller or whatever over some shitty stock beats. not to mention the neptunes have laid their dopest beats down for clipse. and clipse aint commercial as far as hip hop is concerned, they dont sell millions.

Everyneurotic 02.27.2008 07:44 PM

lyrics are boring unless you are the geto boys or three 6 mafia and even t6m dropped the extreme shit already.

i didn't say it was like chingy, i said it sounded like chingy, neptunes produced smooth beats over generic rapping.

Dead-on about the lyrics

"My grinds about family, never been about fame/Come days I wasn't Abel there was always caine."

nature scene 02.27.2008 11:14 PM

Love the Wu. I go through phases with some other rap like Del, but Wu Tang is constantly in my playlist.

I think there's a movie/docu about the Wu Tang coming out soon... Rock the Bells maybe?

I really like Masta Killa's No Said Date album too.

Here's some classic ODB action:

opinions are opinions, but malice's rapping is anything but genric or obring. i like 3 6 but not one dude in their crew has the lyrical talent of either pusha t or malice, theyre more about their beats. geto boys, well yeah, theyre better than clipse.

clipse-chinese new year (malice sample)

Let's play cops and robbers, and watch Heckler & Koch turn cops to martars
As well as niggaz wit plots to rob us
Try me, I'll turn this motherfucker into shuttas
Wit them 911's revin, gunfire leave brethren remains like 9/11
And get the sounds of rounds dispensing
That clack up make 'em back up like it's invisible fencing
When I picture bits and pieces of bone chip and flesh, it tears me to pieces
Cooperate, escaping useless; trust me I'm your friend, I will talk you through this
Trick or treat niggaz wit hoods want the goods
I feel like Robin Hood when I share it wit my hood
Don't forget, he who plays hero gets hit
Don't let the 9 mill riddle your wits smarty pants

i just dont see how you can think thats genric, well maybe genric, cuz its def coke rap, but boring? no way.

uhler 02.28.2008 12:28 AM

i posted this before but here's rza with odb at a talent show. very funny.

ahaha chingy. i've met him a few times. go STL.

GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE, FOOLS. of course all the other old school dudes such as the sugarhill gang and that sort of thing.
NWA
public enemy
wu-tang and all offshoots
beastie boys
kanye west

generally not my favourite genre of music, though.

Inhuman 02.28.2008 12:35 AM

I've been a hip hop head as of late, Dre kicks Deez Nutz. Just Blaze is one of my favorites right now. I listed many of my favorites in another rap thread not too long ago, and don't feel like listing them again. Batreleaser sems to know his stuff, and I saw Clipse live. Their lyrics are hot and probably the only rappers I can hear saying "cockle-doodle-doo mothafucka" and sound scary at the same time.

Rakim's new album is ABOUT TO DROP. For anyone digging him, check out his latest tracks that he released this week. Just Blaze produces one of them, and it's a new style for Ra, but after a few listens I love it.
Rakim - Hiphop
Rakim - It's Nothing (Prod. Just Blaze)

Cantankerous 02.28.2008 12:35 AM

i forgot dr. dre. he whoops some ass.

Inhuman 02.28.2008 12:42 AM

I wish I was less obsessed with Dre because I want to explore more beat styles other than his, Rza's, Premiere's, and Blaze's. But I got this sweet Dre shirt for $3 off ebay.

Geto Boys - Mind Of A Lunatic Lyrics

(He's a paranoiac who's a menace to our society)

[ VERSE 1: Bushwick Bill ]
Paranoid, sittin in a deep sweat
Thinkin I gotta fuck somebody before the week ends
The sight of blood exites me, shoot you in the head
Sit down, and watch you bleed to death
I hear the sound of your last breath
Shouldn't have been around, I went all the way left
You was in the right place with me at the wrong time
I'm a psychopath, in a minute lose my fuckin mind
Calm down, back to reality
Don't fear death, cause I know that it's promised to me
Flashes, I get flashes of Jason
Gimme a knife, a million lives I'm wastin
The shadow of death follows me, I don't give a fuck
Pussy play Superman, your ass'll get boxed up
Put him in a straight jacket, the man's sick
This is what goes on in the mind of a lunatic

(He's a paranoiac who's a menace to our society)
(He's a) (He's a)
(He's a paranoiac who's a menace to our society)

[ VERSE 2: Bushwick Bill ]
Lookin through her window, now my body is warm
She's naked, and I'm a peepin tom
Her body's beautiful, so I'm thinkin rape
Shouldn't have had her curtains open, so that's her fate
Leavin out her house, grabbed the bitch by her mouth
Drug her back in, slammed her down on the couch
Whipped out my knife, said, "If you scream, I'm cuttin"
Opened her legs and commenced the fuckin
She begged me not to kill her, I gave her a rose
Then slit her throat, and watched her shake till her eyes closed
Had sex with the corpse before I left her
And drew my name on the wall like helter skelter
Run for shelter never crossed my mind
I had a guage, a grenade, and even a nine
Dial 911 for the bitch
But the cops ain't shit when they're fuckin with a lunatic

(Another innocent victim of this homicidal maniac)
(Maniac) (Maniac)
(Another innocent victim of this homicidal maniac)

[ VERSE 3: Scarface ]
I sit alone in my four-cornered room starin at candles
Dreamin of the people I've dismantled
I close my eyes and in the circle
Appears the images of sons of bitches that I murdered
Flashbacks of bodies bein fucked up
Once I attack, I'm like a pit on a rage that's goin for guts
Boys used to die when I'm full fo that fry
I be ebbin when I'm high
So I say 'fuck' and just let bullets fly
Like I said before, Scarface is my identity
A homicidal maniac with sucidal tendencies
I'm on the violent tip, so yo, get a grip
And bitch, come equipped, ain't takin no shit
Cause here comes a lunatic

[ VERSE 4: Scarface ]
My girl's gettin skinny, she's strung out on coke
So I went to her mother's house and cut out her throat
Her grandma was standin there, she was screamin out, "Brad!"
As she reached for the telly, I put the blade on granny's ass
Went to the back and grabbed a shovel
Now granny's on her way to meet the devil
Pulled out my .38 and aimed at the bitch
A cop says (Freeze, muthafucka!) Bitch, suck my dick
I said, "Die, muthafuckas!" as I blasted
Something clicked in my head, visions of bodies in plastic
The scent of buckshots in human flesh
Pigs dyin from bullet wounds to the chest
No sheriff's gonna take me on a road
Dark as fuck, and let his pistols explode
Fuck that, cause I ain'ts to die
So I reloaded my Uzi and fired up another fry
It got me crazy as fuck
A ragin psychotic full of that Angel's Dust
The cops had the place surrounded
Hunted for a way to get out - I found it
Innocent bystanders watch me set an example
I popped one, "Let me go, goddammit
Scot free
Or all of these muthafuckas comin with me"
All of a sudden the shit got silent
I remember wakin up, in an asylum
Bein treated like a troubled kid
My shirt was all bloody, and both of my wrists was slit
Think this is harsh? This ain't as harsh as it gets
No tellin what's bein thought up in the mind of a lunatic

(Maniac)
(Maniac)
(Ma-) (Mani-) (Maniac)
(I can't quit)

[ VERSE 5: Willie D ]
November 1st 1966
A damn fool was born with the mind of a lunatic
I shoulda been killed
But sister fucked around and let me live
Now I developped a criminal behaviour
Fuck with me, and I'll slay ya
Ass, beyond recognition, shit
Your dental records couldn't prove your identity, bitch
I beg your pardon, on talkin to borden
You'll never find a muthafucka, so save your milk cartons
Cross the line, your ass is mine
I don't give a fuck if you're 9 or 99
Blind, crippled, and crazy, don't faze me
Your funky ass will be pushin up daisies
You wanna know what makes me click?
My psychiatrist said I got the mind of a lunatic

(Let's get out of here, that guy is crazy)
(Ma-) (Ma-) (Ma-) (Maniac)

[ VERSE 6: Willie D ]
I ain't got it all, so don't fuck with me
Unless your ass wanna be made history
I'll blow your muthafuckin house up
And if your wife and kids are inside, they're fucked
I don't give a damn who I slay
Don't let me get a hold of some E&J
Cause when the shit hit the fan
I'll stab your ass quicker than a Mexican
The nightmares I leave you with on the scene
Will make Freddy bitch ass look like a wet dream
This is fact, not fictional, son of a bitch
I got the mind of a lunatic
