'Sister' Master Tapes

Maybe this can put an end to the rumor they were recorded over..

Don't look so 'recorded over' to me..

Rob Instigator 01.03.2008 10:26 AM

that's a box with marker on it

thurston himself has said they used some of the master tapes from sister, not all of them.

noisereductions 01.03.2008 10:27 AM

where'd ya get those pics anyway?

Danny Himself 01.03.2008 10:38 AM

Davey Urf's flickr page, I think it's from the day SY moved all their stuff into the new studio or something.

It's called a 'joke'.

k-krack 01.03.2008 11:25 AM

The box says 1.12.94... 1994 was when EJSTANS was released/presumably recorded!!! IT'S A HOAX, OF SOME KIND, I DON'T EXACTLY KNOW HOW.
Regardless, you can hear bits o' Sister under EJSTANS.

Rob Instigator 01.03.2008 11:34 AM

yes, get that horrible album EJST&NS and listen to the quiet bits, the lead ins and fade outs and you can hear the sister album underneath,

BTW, this is the only reason I would ever suggest anyone listen to EJST&NS

Odd. "Androg. Mind" is one of my all time fav's.
"Winner's Blues," "Bull In The Heather," "Tokyo Eye," "Screaming Skull"... jeez, I can think of a lot of reasons to suggest someone listen to it.

skink , bone, starfield road, sweet shine etc etc. I rarely listen to this album, but I think it's definitely underrated. that said, BAUUUUUU!!!!!

RanaldoNecro 01.03.2008 12:49 PM

I agree. I think Experimental is fantastic.

If it had handwriting on it from 94 would that bode in favor of it being recorded over?

Tell us the parts of where you can hear it...

RN

Huh? "Tell us parts where you can hear it"? Did I read that right? Because I'm assuming you're not deaf, right?

You can clearly hear sister underneath it.

Oh, and that's hilarious, Rob.. "only reason worth listening to EJST&NS." :)

noisereductions 01.03.2008 01:23 PM

My name is atsonicpark. I don't like Sonic Youth.

jennthebenn 01.03.2008 02:40 PM

i saw this on his flickr page a month or so ago, maybe...thought about
putting it here, but it's still too inconclusive for me to call.

here's an IM convo pantophobia and i had about the subject:

Jennthebenn: It is standard practice to make a copy of a master recording, known as a safety copy, in case the master is lost or damaged.
rantingpatty66: ah ha
rantingpatty66: where is that from
Jennthebenn: wiki
rantingpatty66: interesting
rantingpatty66: i mean it's prudent
Jennthebenn: There is only one original master recording, and that's the recording made at the time of the original recorded performance, but the term "master" is commonly used to describe almost anything used as a source.
rantingpatty66: but i wasn't sure they would do it based on budget concerns
Jennthebenn: so
Jennthebenn: if that is the original master and it was taped over
Jennthebenn: the box is marked incorrectly or
Jennthebenn: they didn't tape over it
Jennthebenn: or
Jennthebenn: there is a safety copy somewhere
Jennthebenn: OR
Jennthebenn: they didn't do a safety copy
rantingpatty66: OR
rantingpatty66: they taped over the safety copy
Jennthebenn: in which case
Jennthebenn: thurston tells a half truth
Jennthebenn: and sister could still be remastered

not one of our finer conversations, really.

noisereductions 01.03.2008 02:45 PM

The most intriguing point you made was "There is only one original master recording, and that's the recording made at the time of the original recorded performance, but the term "master" is commonly used to describe almost anything used as a source."

jennthebenn 01.03.2008 02:48 PM

jet set was recorded october to december, 1993. and no record with "starfield road", "skink", "bone", "doctors orders", "tokyo eye" and "sweet shine" is awful. in my open onion, at least.

Rob Instigator 01.03.2008 02:56 PM

I hate it so much.

sonic youth is my all time favorite band, my all time favorite musicians, the single most important influence on my musical journey upon the Earth, but I fucking hate that album.

Rob Instigator 01.03.2008 02:57 PM

remastering SISTER would do nothing but ruin what sonic yotuh worked hard to achieve and do whidch is to create a WARM album full of songs recorded on nearly ancient analog vacuum tube equitment.

just turn yr shit up and stop listening to music through fucking teeny bullshit earbuds! (that's what i say to people demanindg SISTER be "remastered")

CHOUT 01.03.2008 11:10 PM

in this case, the term 'master' would refer to the original multi track tape...
from there, on analog recordings, there is usually a mixdown of all the multi tracks to a seperate tape, which is what you hear on the album.
you can remaster the original mixes from the mixdown tape, you just couldn't remix it...make sense?

i'm still not convinced about hearing sister under experimental though...i've tried and failed.

For what it's worth, I'll say this: I definitely hear Sister in between tracks on Experimental, although I have to blast the volume to do so. It's unmistakable. That alone doesn't mean they recorded over the masters. It could just be a trick they did for laughs.

Mmm, I used to kind of feel this way about the album (though instead of "hate," I would just say "one of my least favorite.") But over the past year or so, I've been delving into the SY (and related) things I never "got" before, and learned that it all depends on your state of mind, and how you interpret *their* apparent states of mind and intentions. EJST&NS is just one of many musical moments (along with "Bad Moon Rising," Free Kitten's "Sentimental Education" (the title track of that being pure, unadulterated brilliance), and most recently SYR 5) that I have learned not to write off just because it seems dull, rambling, tossed-off, or whatever. And I hate to sound like you need drugs to truly appreciate some things (because good music should transcend that sort of earthly vice, etc. etc.), but if you get really stoned--you know, where everything seems new and confusing, where you focus intently on every little sound, and consider the thought and inspiration that went into deciding to play it (and put it on record)--you may find yourself rethinking your previous opinions like I did. Then again, maybe not. But, having been my first SY purchase (and I had no idea what to expect), "Sweet Shine" and "Self Obsessed and Sexxee" alone were enough to get me totally hooked on SY for life, so that should say something.

Experimental JEt Set is a monumental album. I love everything on it. It SHINES.

Use cool edit to amplify sections. It is definately there though. Definately. Aplify the silence at the end of Screaming Skull and you can hear Pipeline.

cool, nice to have an example to try.

CHOUT 01.04.2008 02:22 AM

I think I feel about NYGF like Rob feels about Experimental, only less violent.

I rarely listen to EJSTANS, but every time I do, I remember that I fucking well love it.
Same deal with... well, a few albums... NYCG+F, A Thousand Leaves (holy cow, I love this one more and more every time I listen... which, like I said, isn't often enough...)
The only album that I simply cannot get into, and barely like at all is Washign Machine. A couple good-great tracsk, but the bum songs on it are just not good enough for me to justify listening to it. *I can't bring myself to listen to just songs...

God damn, this post is incoherent.

no, i mean people talk about the sound bleed but i haven't seen any specific descriptions on what to listen for where...so this helps, kudos to you, bra!

ZEROpumpkins 01.04.2008 02:39 AM

Like I said, the silence at the end of Screaming Skull, listen out for Lee going "help me to kill this love" from Pipeline. About 2.5 seconds of it or so.

could be dated that also for the preparation of the upcoming reissue on geffen,,,but then again sister was still for sale by sst at that point.

anyway....

I LOVE MASTER TAPE BOXESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They hold an allure, containing the raw tracks of tuneage!

Like the VU boxset with the tape boxes on em? Maybe it's only me...

I don't know what that means, but at any rate, it was merely a joke. I thought the e-yelling "HOAX" would have been a dead give-away.
But that doesn't change the fact that you can hear Sister underneath EJSTANS (yeah, just kick the volume during the spaces between tracks).

✌➬ 01.04.2008 02:48 AM

I could never hear it. Oh well.

Use cool edit or something and amplify the crap out of it.

terminal pharmacy 01.04.2008 03:01 AM

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.ph...VnNsMHpIRGc9PQ

here is the end of starfield......

warning warning warning...... watch the volume on your system, i had to add 30db of output gain to get the volume up enough

ZEROpumpkins 01.04.2008 03:02 AM

Your volume can only be as loud as your speakers are set theoretically. EDIT: Oh, I see. You haven't amplified it yet.

✌➬ 01.04.2008 03:03 AM

I barely could hear something. Oh well it never bother me.

ZEROpumpkins 01.04.2008 03:05 AM

Digitally amplify it. If i remember correctly, it's a clip from Catholic Block where Thurston says "Do you like to fuck?"

CHOUT 01.04.2008 03:20 AM

holy fuck it is true...i used goldwave and I can hear the end of Stereo Sanctity at the beginning of Screaming Skull!

CHOUT 01.04.2008 03:22 AM

yep and the end of screaming skull you hear just enough of Pipeline for Lee to say "Kill This Love".

CHOUT 01.04.2008 03:29 AM

end of self obsessed = tuff gnarl
