City Poems and City Music: Adrian Henri and Friends
11 April – 16 June 2019
Gallery 2

Poets, artists and musicians respond to the experience of urban life in this series of live events and exhibition. A live programme presents contemporary work on the theme of the city with performances from musician Thurston Moore (b. 1958, USA), poet CAConrad (b. 1966, USA) and British punk trio Big Joanie. The events accompany an exhibition drawing on the archives of Liverpool-based painter, poet and pioneering performance artist Adrian Henri (1932 – 2000), whose works from the 1960s and early 1970s focused on the city. The artist also featured in a Whitechapel Gallery 1975 exhibition which inspires this project. City Poems and City Music is guest curated by Catherine Marcangeli, Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz.

Join X-ray Audio and sonic innovator Thurston Moore for a unique evening celebrating rebel sounds, bootleg technology and cold war culture in film, words and music cut live with vintage recording devices.
Many older people in Russia remember seeing and hearing strange vinyl type discs when they were young. The discs had partial images of skeletons on them, were called “Bones” or “Ribs” and originated in the Cold War years of the Soviet Union. In an era when the recording industry was ruthlessly controlled by the State, music-mad bootleggers had found an incredible alternative means of making illegal copies of forbidden recordings – they repurposed used X ray plates obtained from local hospitals.

‘They are images of pain and damage overlayed with the sounds of pleasure, fragile photographs of the interiors of Soviet citizens inscribed with thematic they secretly loved.’

The X-Ray Audio project explores this amazing world of forbidden music, cold war culture, bootleg technology and human endeavour with an online archive, a book, documentary, live events and a travelling exhibition. In this special live event, X-Ray Audio will tell the strange story of the Soviet bootleggers and demonstrate the art of cutting music to x-ray with very special guest Thurston Moore.

A unique musical meeting of three of the most inventive performers of our time – for perhaps the only time - all to benefit Resonance FM! As co-founder and legendary multi-instrumentalist with Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones needs no introduction. A restless and radical musical innovator for over half a century - as composer, arranger, and producer across genres ranging from pop to opera to electronica and avant-garde - he is joined for this intimate performance at the iconic The 100 Club by like minds in the form of Thurston Moore and Steve Noble. Thurston's ground-breaking use of extended techniques as guitarist in Sonic Youth, the most enduring of America's experimental rock bands, is matched here by the extraordinary dexterity of improvising drummer Steve, collaborator of choice of countless free jazz iconoclasts including Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee and Matthew Shipp. The three come together for an unforgettable evening to raise funds for Resonance FM - the most inventive radio station in the world. Tickets: £50 on-line here.

That’s a lot of 12 string electrics. Makes we wonder what John Dwyer would add to that line up...

Help me out with a symbol for Steve Noble. Also, SY should make shirts and patches with just their symbols from Daydream Nation with no other signifiers. As if my Daydream Nation backpatch jacket isn't enough...

Ha! By the way, Sandy Denny had her own Led Zeppelin IV symbol:

Yes she does! That would go good with Lee's infinity symbol, and he is definitely a self identified Sandy Denny fan, but would require a posthumous collaboration. What Sandy Denny song should Lee do to make this symbol pairing relevant?

Thurston will be playing four shows in the Netherlands in September, as part of The Ex 40 Years Anniversary: According to the Vera site it will be a duo performance with Katharina (the drummer of The Ex). According to the Bimhuis site it will be a duo with Paal Nilssen-Love. The other two venues have no further details as of yet.

The Ex will then head on to the UK for a tour, but it's unclear whether Thurston will be joining (I checked a couple of those sites but they had no certain details yet). But even without Thurston on the bill, it will be a fine party anyway :)

AlSonic 07.25.2019 11:02 AM

Thurston’s new album SPIRIT COUNSEL will be available on International Peace Day (21 September 2019)! We are delighted to announce the following tour dates in support of this album:
Thurston Moore announces a headline tour of Europe and the United States in support of his 3 CD boxset SPIRIT COUNSEL, to be released on International Peace Day, September 21, via his record label with Eva Prinz, The Daydream Library Series.
Thurston Moore moved to New York City in 1976 to play punk, founding Sonic Youth in 1980. Through his solo work, collaborations within bands, and through his support of other artists, all that he has touched in the four decades since has been part of a gorgeous and perpetually evolving sonic revolution.
