Family in NYC

Text of Light and Mirror Dash too: http://www.familylosangeles.com/blog...for-month.html

Checked out the space Sat, after seeing pictures of the opening I was expecting huge lines but it was ok and plenty of well dressed security to keep everyone in order. Basically its a big room with 5 or 6 tables of books. I would have liked a photo of the large stack of Sensational Fix books. There is also stuff under glass on the walls.

Mirror/Dash began just about at the start time, amazingly, and added Bill Nace for this performance. The set was probably more guitar oriented than I expected and sounded hot. T and Bill banged on the geetars while Kim switched on and off from gtr and voc.

I think I'd love to live in NYC for a summer....

Thanks for the link Tesla...

Thanks. What did Kim sing?

At the Whitney museum Mirror/Dash show, after the noisy intro, Kim went wild with vocals about going to 'another studio' and how she 'wants women to make art with the same meaning as men.'

I missed this. I get confused between my Grandma's birthday, the Mirror/Dash date and a ride to the airport when I talk about the Text of Light date. Won't miss ToL show at Family pop up.

The following evening Eva Prinz and Thurston Moore, co-publishers of Ecstatic Peace Library played hosts at their own pop up store opening at Andy Spade's Partners & Spade storefront at 40 Great Jones. The pop up offerings include punk zines, hand stamped record sleeves, string-bound broadsheets, and even tee shirts along with Ecstatic Peace Library titles such as Justine Kurland's This Train is Bound for Glory. At Partner's & Spade Thurston played with legendary American free jazz saxophone player Daniel Carter who has performed with the Negatones and Yo La Tengo.

What events have you checked out? I think you need the security guys, people would be stealing them blind otherwise.

I only saw the mirror dash - next week the Charles Willeford symposium seems like an essential event....

Is Text of Light April 24 or May 1?

cagedbird 04.24.2010 01:41 PM

It could be May 2. I saw a poster at the actual site and it said the text of light show is 5/2. Isn't Lee out of town?

silverfreepress (sdasher) 04.24.2010 11:48 PM

may 1. or uno de mayo

last night was cool. lots of people gathered at family nyc. you might think it was a book fair for art snobs. and it was. but it was so much more. a place for old friends to meet up. a convenient spot for out of town vacationers. and of course, it was the text of light show that made it so special. some people couldn't stand the show. but to the tried and true it was a supremely moving experience. the films projected were stellar and the scores (were they scores?) were out of this world.

i got a good spot and i was transfixed while thinking up a lot of ideas i have read or thought about film and music. if sonic youth make music from the sounds of the city, what are the ingredients of text of light? plaid shirts? three-point turns? the universe?

anyway, thanks 4 a grate time!

A super intense duo performance between Alan LIcht and Lee - Lee had hung his guitar by the neck from some pipes above and was swinging it back and forth and used a bow to strategically zip along the strings as the guitar swung past - Lee would then lean over and adjust his effects and I was just waiting for the guitar to swing back and knock him in the head but it missed him - Alan had a table covered with effects and was creating enormous slabs of gorgeously wrenching sound - awesome.

However, superdouche had to be seated next to me -at a certain point I'm listening and it sounds like Alan is feeding arock song into the mix, so it sounds like a rock radio is playing in the next room, its not really working for me but reminds me of a Tonic show several years ago where they used an old cut up sports film (with sndtrk) to play against - but as the minutes tick past I realize the sound isn't coming from the PA, its coming from this douchebags I-phone - I yell at the guy - "is that you? Are you playing music on your cell phone" He cries 'no' like I caught him playing with himself, but my recording shows the 'song' immediately stopped. I can't figure out if this shithead thought he was 'jamming' with the band, or what? It wasn't that his cell was ringing, it was constant play. In this case it should be legal to kill someone.

Rob Instigator 05.03.2010 10:17 AM

what a fucking dickhead.
should have stolen his iphone

tesla69 05.04.2010 09:03 AM

there was also a bird whistler - I would have just thought it was part of the mix but during the applause the bird whistler just couldn't resist using his little device that makes bird whistles whihc tipped me off it wasn't Alan or Lee.

I just chalk this up to an "L.A." art experience. shiteaters.
