so.. the whole music thing,...

no matter how many times everyone critisizes/re-assesses sonic youth (not saying it's a bad thing) or how much we complain about some of the horrible songs, face it.
we love sonic youth and bands like dinosaur jr and just the whole underground kind of thing because we all know we hate the mainstream and not because bands have sold out but because if you listen to a three days grace song for example, there is nothing creative about it, lyrics are cliched, feelings have been already expressed and it's just a repeat of everything else. just whiny and complaints. so i know that we love to tear these albums apart but deep down inside we're smiling because we're not wasting our time childishly idolizing today's shitty bands like fallout boy and what not.

i just had to get this out, i was kind of thinking about it all day, agree or disagree..

Everyneurotic 09.01.2007 01:16 PM

that's relative.

to many, many, many people, sonic youth (and dinosaur jr) are shitty bands and that doesn't mean they don't like good music.

and it's because we're not force fed mainstream shit that we criticize and question things, if we took for granted every note sy released, we'd be nothing but posers who only want to look cool for listening to a band with good reputation among critics and fans.

k-krack 09.01.2007 01:23 PM

I don't get it... are you saying we shouldn't judge because... they are a good band?
If you really love a band, you should at least be able to say when they've done stuff you don't love, otherwise, like rewdick said, yr just a poser, not showing yr true feeling, and just, well, putting the band on a pedestal. We're all human.

syntax-free 09.01.2007 01:29 PM

no thats not what im saying.
ok i dont' really make sense.
i meant that it's great that everybody who listens to sonic youth is kind of obsessed with the whole idea of looking for new creative ways to do stuff and discuss things and even if we say we hate certain songs because ____ still we love talking about it cuz it's better here than out there in the mainstream.
ok sorry i rarely ever make sense when i talk so yeah.
ok to put it this way, for example, if i ever met thurston moore or something, i wouldn't be star-struck, i'd be willing to discuss his poetry and his trip to new york city and the things he's done, you know? people in the mainstream are just obssessed and they don't know why. savvy?

Everyneurotic 09.01.2007 01:32 PM

but i don't think anybody in these reassessment threads has said expressed total rejection to all or most of sy's discography.

it's not like we say we hate most of it, in fact, we love most of it.

Well, that's a given, doesn't really have to be said to be widely known... y'know.

And I would be totally star-struck if I met Thurston. Dude is a god. A god that makes mistakes on every rare occasion.

Everyneurotic 09.01.2007 01:39 PM

i mean, why would this guy say...

...oh, i get it, he's worried lurkers will think we don't like sonic youth really.

cute.

syntax-free 09.01.2007 01:40 PM

i'm a girl lol. and i never make sense, don't use it against me

yea that's true. you know what sucks? the fact that the cbgb is closed... i mean if it was open it would be a way to keep punk more alive

k-krack 09.01.2007 01:45 PM

CBGB's really doesn't mean anything to me personally (of course it was a figurehead...) as I don't live in New York. But music will survive so long as there are people that love it.

syntax-free 09.01.2007 01:48 PM

that's what i always say to the punk's dead argument.

sooo anyways. i'm kind of new here. kind of. and i could talk about sonic youth 24 fuckin 7.... do you people talk on msn too

Everyneurotic 09.01.2007 01:49 PM

'xcuse, ma'am.

yeah, cb's had, for the past 20 some years not catered to the punk crowd, they had everything from indie rock to metal to showcases for major labels.

punk is alive in the music, the labels and the artists who embrace it's principles.

syntax-free 09.01.2007 01:55 PM

it's alive by simply talking about it

Everyneurotic 09.01.2007 02:08 PM

i think it takes more than that but it's a good start.

atsonicpark 09.01.2007 06:32 PM

Duh I Like Pollvo

For every one Sonic Youth tune that I don't like, there are seven that blow me absolutely away.

well said. A+

I'm finding it funny to go into the "reassessing" threads and see posts like "This song has no merit whatsoever!" or "This song is cringeworthy!" about songs that I (and a lot of other people) love. All stated as if it were absolute fact.

I think there's also a tendency for people to like only certain types of songs or eras, and dismiss everything else. Like if they're fans of the dirgey stuff of the Bad Moon Rising era, they'll say that the rock songs on Dirty are complete garbage. And vice versa.

For me, the variety in SY's music is what I love about them. The fact that I can listen to something delicate and abstract like A Thousand Leaves and then put on something really loud and hard like Daydream Nation is why I've been a fan for years and years and I'm not bored.

pbradley 09.02.2007 01:06 AM

Personally, I would hope that people are strong willed enough to not be bothered by critical words of somebody else. I've never been a fan of the "fanclub" mentality (wow, some accidental irony there).

I know several people who do this, it disturbs me. I give all artist a chance, that is why my taste in music goes from the so-called "underground," to the mainstream. I know most people dismiss the mainstream, but there are some good songs out there.
