SY piano album... ?

According to GOODBYE 20TH CENTURY (the book), Thurston & Lee were really into the idea of doing an album where they both only played pianos, but Kim squashed the idea.

What the F? Does anybody else think that had the potential to be amazing? I can't even imagine.

al shabbray 08.25.2008 07:34 AM

really?
I am wondering that they both can play the piano

SYRFox 08.25.2008 07:40 AM

That would be really great - as a SYR maybe?
Providence and Secret Girl are amazing tracks

al shabbray 08.25.2008 07:44 AM

oh yeah forget about them

noisereductions 08.25.2008 09:00 AM

Didn't Lee play a little synth of "Sympathy?"

atsonicpark 08.25.2008 09:04 AM

He played organ... Nothing really prominent of course.

I think a detuned piano album would be amazing.

HECKLER SPRAY 08.25.2008 09:08 AM

A whole album ? ....
Too much piano for me, I think. Maybe 2 or 3 songs, but not a whole album.
It would not be Sonic Youth but Boring Youth.
I don't want them to become The New Red Hot Chili Peppers...

That's a pretty daft assumption. I mean, you're saying that the musicians themselves would produce boring music if they switched to a different instrument? You're nuts. If anything it could result in one of their most adventurous albums since SYR4. RHCP? WTF?

correct.

HECKLER SPRAY 08.25.2008 09:38 AM

Hey, keep cool man.
I mean that SY is a fucking good rock band with their guitars, I think a WHOLE album with piano instead of alternative tuned guitars would be a bit boring. I think the piano would be too restrictive.

And Lee and Thurston are not free Jazz pioano players...

noisereductions 08.25.2008 10:03 AM

Yeah the restriction is what makes it interesting. Y'know the ol' "necessity is the mother of invention" thing... or sort of how the restriction of having cheap guitars that couldnt stay in tune forced them to create amazing music with alt. tunings?

SonicBebs 08.25.2008 02:30 PM

changing to a different instrument (especially a pinao) would be fucking amazing. I reckon they'd get some spooky stuff going on. It can be such a haunting instrument

(didn't Jim play the keys on Sympathy and Golden Blue?) (how anal was that!?)

SonicBebs 08.25.2008 02:32 PM

It does make you wonder why they dont do it just not as SY.

Just cause Kim poo-pooed it I dont see why that should stop them doing a side project. Who does She think she is? Stupid Kim. (heh heh)

diskaholic-anonymous 08.25.2008 04:01 PM

...but they played already piano...and sounds goooooooooood!

viewtiful_alan 08.25.2008 04:27 PM

Music that is purely acoustic piano and nothing else can rarely hold my attention...

deflinus 08.25.2008 04:36 PM

is piano a string instrument or a percussion instrument?

Derek 08.25.2008 04:41 PM

String.
