More info on the Framus guitar Thurston uses in Sugar Kane...

This is for Chris L to possibly update the gear guide, but some others may find this kinda interesting as there are some nice pics!... I Found this while perusing guitars on eBay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/1965-FRAMUS-GOLD...item336282ff96

The guitar I suppose is actually an early to mid 60's Framus Golden Strato De Luxe Model # 5/168-54gl. looks to me the exact model Thurston uses in the Sugar Kane video. great pics in the auction, crazy mirrored switchplate and interesting pickguard. pretty expensive like most Framus guitars these days...
This is what else the seller says:

sunburst finish, solidbody,
  • sandwich construction
  • tremolo, muter
  • Rosewood fingerboard
  • 2 PU, oval, gold
  • organ-effect
  • gold covers
  • built since ca. 1963

    this particular instrument:
  • dates ca. 1965
  • model built until the mid 60s
Organ effect? weird i'm guessing its a built in fuzz effect, not too uncommon for non US type made electrics of this time period.

That is one sweet looking guitar, in my opinion....

Not too crazy about the organ effect though.

EVOLghost 03.27.2011 09:11 AM

Wow that is a beautiful body.

Ghostchase 03.27.2011 03:56 PM

I want! I'd buy it if I had the money. Framus never heard of them, but great looking guitar.

nice find on the Framus Page...

the auctioned guitar looks to be some variant on this particular model as it only has 2 pickups (angled) and not 3 and not as many controls so i wonder if this particular guitar really has the built-in organ effect...

hirsute_biped 03.28.2011 11:04 PM

just for the hell of it, i sent the seller a question about that weird knob with the handle on it (closest to the pickups), i'm guessing it has something to do with the organ effect...

There are quite a few of these guitars with chrome hardware on ebay right now, including a 12 string:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Framus-...t_500w t_1204

Plus I found a video of a guy demonstrating the same "organ effect" on a different model Framus, and a bulletin board which explains that the effect is "a spring controlled lever for pannig the tone between the PU's". The Framus vintage archive I linked to before tantalizingly and perplexingly calls it a "half-mechanical organ effect". Not very organ-like to my ears based on this video demonstration, maybe more convincing with louder amp, effects,etc...

TMI perhaps? Very cool vintage Jazzmaster/Jaguar inspired guitars with their own thing going on.

Ghostchase 05.13.2012 03:59 PM

Wow. I'd buy the Red one for $999 for sure!

Pretty much nobody in the USA had ever heard of Framus Guitars until John Lennon started playing one with The Beatles in the mid-late 60s. When we first came across this Framus that T used that was a reference point in it's favor...
