"Candle" Observation

Although SY is my favorite band, nobody's perfect. One of my few complaints is the "bridge" or "solo" in Candle, an otherwise great song. It goes on for 16 measures (or whatever the correct term is), without much change. It's just too long, in my opinion.

Last night, they opened with that song and it kicked ass. I think they were reading my mind, because they shortened the bridge.

I like the flaming car in the video on that part.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I've felt the same way about that part. When I'm listening, I usually try to focus on the little glissandi thingies in the guitars - they're not the same every time. I wish they had turned that stuff up in the mix or something, and really made them different.

Danny Himself 02.17.2007 06:36 PM

I don't know what part you mean as I'm not really that well-informed on the names of different song parts.

noumenal 02.17.2007 06:45 PM

It's the jam from approx. 2:56 to 3:47.

Danny Himself 02.17.2007 06:51 PM

Oh, that.

Meh. Self-indulgence ruins riot in Daydream Nation. It doesn't bother me too much.

noumenal 02.17.2007 06:52 PM

The best way to enjoy that part is to just stop thinking, turn it up, and rock the fuck out.

Danny Himself 02.17.2007 06:57 PM

Damn right. If this were real life we'd have high-fived or something by now.

ZEROpumpkins 02.17.2007 11:53 PM

Hmm goes on about 8 bars too long.

satirejohn 02.18.2007 06:03 AM

no man i love it! I actually thought it was too bad they shortened it, when i saw them do the song.

HECKLER SPRAY 02.18.2007 06:13 AM

Yeah it's a good part ! To shorten it spoils the song. Imagine they don't freak out on Silver Rocket. It will be a little boring.

The freak out on Silver Rocket is awesome! I don't think it's anything like the part in Candle that we're talking about. In Silver Rocket, they completely leave the structure of the song and go into a beautiful, noisy mess with no discernible rhythm. Then, they gradually return to the song. Would be a completely different song without that part. In Candle, the bridge still maintains the rhythm of the song.

PAULYBEE2656 02.18.2007 12:11 PM

nope, dont agree.
i would have said total trash goes on for about 4 minutes too long!!!!

kingcoffee 02.18.2007 04:41 PM

Getting trashed while listening to drivel isn't bad, either.
