What do you want the next SY album to sound like?

Okay guys what do you want SY's next album to sound like?

Personnally i would like to see a return to the Evol - Daydream Nation rough edge production (that sounded so atmospheric and breezy) and either an electronically influenced record (kinda like 'The Whitey Album, but with all original songs) or a continuation of the Sonic Nurse/Rather Ripped songwriting approach.

Cantankerous 10.03.2006 06:39 PM

daydream nation was produced pretty slickly.

Hip Priest 10.03.2006 06:44 PM

A non-stop one-track LP semi-improvised around a pre-planned idea, with some nice melodies interrupting a cacophony of carefully-controlled noise, dialogue samples, patches of singing and interpolatory electronica.

SYR7.

exactly.

about the topic: does it matter?

Pookie 10.03.2006 06:53 PM

dubstep

nomadicfollower 10.03.2006 07:13 PM

christian metal

jennthebenn 10.03.2006 07:18 PM

like this!

greatest album cover ever...if sonic youth could bring the sound of a
VO5-addicted preacher and a gummi candy satan out on record...shiiiit.

Inhuman 10.03.2006 08:03 PM

Eyyyeeeelliiinnneerrrrr
or stuff similar to Confusion is Sex or the serious songs on the Whitey Album

k-krack 10.03.2006 08:08 PM

I don't care, SY can do no wrong. I'd like to hear some more Helen Lundeberg type-songs though. I prefered it to Eyeliner.

Androol 10.03.2006 08:29 PM

like they are out from under contract with geffen

nature scene 10.03.2006 08:32 PM

I'd like them to not sound like a classic rock band again.

noisemachine 10.03.2006 09:11 PM

I want them to make an album that sounds like whatever they want it to sound like. Its always a bad sign when a band tries to emulate the soundof one of their "classic" albums. It means theyre out of ideas and trying to hold on to whatever is left of their careers. SY still has energy and creativity so they should do next whatever they feel is right.

Androol 10.03.2006 09:16 PM

i agree completely but i am still really excited about what being away from geffen could mean for the next album.

against_the_grain 10.03.2006 09:21 PM

An album of Beatle covers. Hahahaa....

Nah...just something brand new. Being my favorite contemporary band, I count on being challenged by their material...complicated or simplistic...

I don't want it to sound like anything else they've done, I'm relying on something groundbreaking in it's own way each time.

I'd like to hear new material live before I'm familiar with it, that's so exciting !!!

lisayoung 10.03.2006 10:33 PM

well.i hope it will be like anything except rather ripped.cos this one is just rather ripped.

Everyneurotic 10.03.2006 10:42 PM

they'll probably resign to geffen or sign to universal...quit saying "i hope they release their new album on destijl or troubleman or deathbomb arc", it's not going to happen.

Saturseven 10.03.2006 11:18 PM

I want them to cover Nevermind.

static-harmony 10.03.2006 11:28 PM

They should sound like an orchestrated band, for their next album.

GeneticKiss 10.04.2006 12:02 AM

I hope they continue in the vein of RR songs like "Turquoise Boy", "Rats", and "Pink Steam"...

interesting, i never thought of this possibility.

i havent ever heard of those other two but id be very conscerned if it was troubleman. its been almost ten years since ive followed anything from them.

jean-nicolas 10.04.2006 02:01 AM

I'd like it to be a mix of A thousand Leaves and SYR1.

porkmarras 10.04.2006 02:10 AM

Grime.

youthoftomorrow 10.04.2006 02:14 AM

Sonic Mariachi.

sonic sphere 10.04.2006 07:56 AM

confusion is sex

sonicl 10.04.2006 08:01 AM

I've said this loads of times before, I may as well say it again:

I would love to hear an album from SY recorded largely on acoustic instruments. Let the songwriting come out from behind the noise, 'cos the noise is still, after all these years, seen as a gimmick by the media and the non-fan. I would love for there to be an album that forces people to focus on the band's songwriting skills and musicianship.

HeatherAngel 10.04.2006 08:25 AM

DAYDREAM NATION!

or at leasr something a lot harder...

Rob Instigator 10.04.2006 09:45 AM

I want sonic youth to record an album with steve albini and teahc the world how to grind the skronk yet again, for the new millenium.

Danny Himself 10.04.2006 10:00 AM

I'd like a mix of Pavement (circa 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain', especially 'Newark Wilder') and Brian Wilson. Some epic shit without too much of the gimmicky noise-for-noise's-sake.

satirejohn 10.04.2006 11:10 AM

i would also like the production to be less clean and more atmospheric (EVOL is a good example I guess).. obviously it would be cool to have a new direction, however I hope there'll be more noise this time around.

guitarpro 10.04.2006 11:42 AM

pure insanity

screamingskull 10.04.2006 11:44 AM

like Daydream nation/Murray street/Washing machine all put into a blender.

Sonic Youth's always been changing, haven't they?

CIS sounds nothing like BMR and EVOL
BMR and EVOL s.n.l. SISTER
SISTER is basically a shorter version of DN
DN s.n.l. GOO, Dirty, EJT&NS
G, D, E... don't really sound alike either, do they?
They don't sound like WM, ATL, MS, SN

What will they do after Rather Ripped? Well, SY have played with a certain sound more than once before, so I'd love to hear more songs by Gordon a la "Turquoise Boy" (for the first time, maybe since the 80s, she steals the show as a vocalist).

I guess I'd like something that is as atmospheric (but not necessarily as dark) as Bad Moon Rising and as adventurous (but not necessarily as long) as Daydream Nation.

Trasher02 10.04.2006 12:11 PM

Why a new album? RR rocked soo HARD!

alyasa 10.04.2006 02:18 PM

An album with songs like "Rats"; off of RR; mixed with "Stones" off of Sonic Nurse... Oh, and more Lee songs. Thank you very much.

scott v 10.04.2006 02:34 PM

"SISTER is basically a shorter version of DN"

i couldn't disagree more... Sister is basically better than Daydream Nation.

Yeah I think we can be pretty certain SY will sign with Geffen or Universal. Although I think they should find another major label or at least a more prolific independant. Geffen is a bit of sinking ship, and I don't think they've done enough to promote Sonic Youth. Their last few albums have been some of the most groundbreaking albums of their career, they deserve to have more attention.

zulfiqar 10.06.2006 01:04 AM

something with a bit more noise than rather ripped, but with the harmony of the guitar work on murray street and sonic nurse.

Another thing, I really like the tuning thurston has used for most of the tracks on the past couple albums (CGDGCD) but I wouldn't mind if he broke out a new one.
