I was waiting for Pussy Riot to perform at the Olympic opening ceremony Friday night. What happened?

Fear of a Female Planet: Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) on Why Russia and the US Need a Pussy Riot

in Current Affairs, Music, Politics | September 12th, 2012 5 Comments

Courageous feminist punk band Pussy Riot has received more public exposure than they ever could have hoped for since three members were arrested after a February 21st performance at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral and charged with “hooliganism.” The band formed last September in direct response to Vladimir Putin’s decision to seek the presidency again in March 2012,

Sighs... basic journalism 101, check your facts!!! Pussy Riot is not a band, never was a band, they are/were an "art collective" and the "Pussy Riot" performance in the cathedral was was a guerrilla street art performance project. Too many news sources are just being lazy.

Its always fascinating to me when young adult women suddenly discover something about their own vaginas which men have understood intuitively since the beginning of time. That the vagina is not a passive organ, but a powerful force of nature. It doesn't receive, it transforms.

Shame on you, Kim.

You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.

Rob Instigator 02.10.2014 03:14 PM

You know they played T.A.T.U. music during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies? f'reals

pokkeherrie 02.11.2014 07:48 PM

I didn't know that, but I wasn't joking either... they did perform at the opening ceremony!

But it wasn't aired internationally and I can't find it on youtube now because the IOC has claimed all copyrights. (that's not a joke either)

Big surprise, "Pussy Riot" are arrested again, on equally trumped up charges, but are they surprised? There is a world of difference between protest and stupidity. Its like, DUH, you're living in a police state and you just got out of prison where you were for TWO YEARS. Shit, feel like two more??

I have 2 thoughts on this.

1. It seems like it is a publicity stunt for its own sake more than anything - the depth of their political analysis seems to be "we mustn't have a bare chested president who rides a horse". Its like a clown act. They're safe. So Madonna can speak up for them, but I don't hear her speaking up for Julian Assange, who has been targeted for death by the US/UK according to Snowden's documents.

2. If some US group tried that at say the superbowl, the response would be equally brutal if not worse. the american crowd would do the cossak's job.

Maybe he's a freak, he wants them all for himself?

"MOSCOW — A trade ban on lacy lingerie has Russian consumers and their neighbours’ knickers in a knot. The ban will outlaw any underwear containing less than 6 per cent cotton from being imported, made or sold in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan."

more important in the article is:
"Sunday’s panty protest in Kazakhstan followed a larger demonstration the day before against a 19 per cent devaluation of the country’s currency, the tenge"

I'm in the school that greatly fears this happening here in the US, but thats for a different thread.
