Does sonic youth compare to the sum of its parts?

In my opinion sonic youth is more than merely the sum of its parts but a comrade of mine recently stated that they are avereage and that the solo projects are better do any of you share my Wroth at him?

sonic youth far outweigh the sum of it's parts. the solo projects are usually great and wonderful but sonic youth have the place in my heart.
