Like alot of Thurston's (and Lee's for that matter) songs, I feel like it has a very specific meaning to its author, but is written in a way that lets it mean different things to different listeners.
They have a very specific quality that makes it feel like a life story, but its just vague enough to make it transferrable. It's a rare and beautiful quality that not many other song writers really have (Neil Young and Leonard Cohen jump to mind immediately tho)
