Carly Simon sues Starbucks over her 2008 album; Sonic Youth also says Hear Music label lacked marketing oomph

Posted by Melissa Allison

AP reports that the lawsuit, filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, says the album "wasn't available in 'a substantial number' of Starbucks stores during the key early months following its release. Later, when the disc was stocked in Starbucks locations, the Seattle-based company slashed the price."
The legal action comes a few months after Sonic Youth expressed disappointment at Starbucks' treatment of their "Hits Are For Squares" album, which they expected to sell big. Instead, band member Kim Gordon told Spinner, "It's impossible to find anywhere."
Gordon also said, "[i]t took so long that by the time it came out their music division had been basically cut."
In the midst of Starbucks' reorganization, its Hear Music label faded into marketing oblivion at Concord Music Group.
