You need an amp. I think almost everyone who gets a new stereo like that and plugs in a stand alone turntable has faced your same situation so don't feel distressed. You can even use a mixer as an amp if you'd like.

If the mixer is one of the powered variety (inbuilt 2 ch amplifier) otherwise no.
