STEVE SHELLEY

I unfortunately don't have much knowledge regarding Steve's drum equipment, particularly due to the fact that it's rather difficult to identify based purely on sight. His kits have changed a lot over the years, and in addition to those listed below he was using Ludwig and Gretsch kits in the early-mid 90s. His 1995 setup featured below comes from an article in "Musician" magazine, December '95, and the 1999 set-up (which should cover '97 thru '99) is taken from the list of gear stolen in July 1999.

Steve has always been a very imaginative drummer, incorporating tools such as mallets, maracas and brushes into his percussion style. He's been using mallets since "Tom Violence", and more recently on "Theresa's Sound-World" "Female Mechanic Now On Duty" & "Heather Angel". Maracas have been used to shape entire songs, such as "Dirty Boots" and "Bull in the Heather". He's banged on metallic devices in songs like "Beauty Lies in the Eye" "PCH" and "Stil", and spends the entire first half of the latter song tinkling away at a small chinese bell resting on his snare.

In 1997 Steve really began to experiment with additional percussion devices onstage. The "A Thousand Leaves" era material saw Steve using a gong (Stil), various Moroccan clay drums (Anagrama, Karen Koltrane), bells, cracked cymbals, and supposedly even saw blades during the improvisations that closed most 1998 shows. In 1999 he began using a Groovebox programmable synth, featured heavily in "Lightnin", the end of "Small Flowers Crack Concrete", and of course, "Campfire", a Sonic Youth track composed entirely on the device. According to the Destroyed Room liner notes, they accidentally left this at the airport in Paris (possibly at the May 25 2000 gig?). For the 2000 tour, Jim wrote a program on his laptop that would emulate a Groovebox effect, which Steve would use onstage.

Here are 11 pictures of Steve's kit from a variety of angles, including his assortment of percussion (gongs, mallets, tambourine, etc). Also, take note of the device on his drum stool - the "Thumper" -- which thumps his seat everytime he hits the kick drum. I took these photographs before soundcheck at the Fillmore in San Francisco, Jul7 14th 2006.

I think Steve's set-up is pretty much the same. '68 Ludwig kit, K Classic Dark Custom cymbals (13" hi-hat, 17" crash, 20" ride), Zildjian plates and gong. The Thumper is still there too (check out its little amp!). There's new kick drum art, though! Shinya Yamamoto painted two heads for Steve, and the first one was used on the 'Rather Ripped' tour and beyond (check the '06 pix). Now he's replaced it with the second design.
