THIS DOCUMENT AND ALL ITS CONTENTS WERE COMPILED BY HENRY WELD. I'VE REPRINTED IT TO COVER PRE-SY/SIDE PROJECT TERRITORY FOR THE SONIC YOUTH DISCOGRAPHY @ http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp/index.html ------------------ Pre Sonic Youth =============== "I was in a band when I was going to school in Toronto that was this kind of outrageous garage noise band. That was like '75 or something. We played at Anover Film Festival. They turned off the electricity." (Chemical Imbalance 4) Kim Gordon was a visual artist in LA in the mid-70's. She moved to NY in 1978 and was in a band called CKM with Christine Hahn and Miranda. She and Miranda also recorded the Just Another Asshole track. Miranda went on to record as Thick Pidgeon. Christine was in The Static with Glenn Branca and went on to Malaria in Germany. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lee led the band Fluks (later Flucts) through the 1978-80 (no releases) and spent 2.5 years in Glenn Branca's Ensemble (some of it concurrent with Sonic Youth). Truss de Groot played in a band called + Instruments (aka Bandt + Instruments, Plus Instruments) in Holland in 1979/80. In 1981 she moved to NYC and retained the name for a new band that included herself, Lee Ranaldo and David Linton. They "toured" Holland after Lee and David's jaunt through Europe with Glenn Branca. While there they released the following: + Instruments February-April 1981 1982 - LP - Kremlin Products, KR005, Netherlands ??? 1982 - flexi with Vinyl magazine #3 The earlier Dutch incarnation of + Instruments released three records (Special Agreement/Sweet Banana//Words 7" - Plurex, 0011, 1980); Nasmak + Instruments split LP with Nasmak - Plurex, 1800, 1980), split 12" with Nasmak - Zick Zack, ZZ85, Germany, 1981). Nasmak's bass player in Nasmak was Theo van Eenbergen aka Theo van Rock of Rollins' band fame. Truss was the Dutch woman who took Jim away from Sonic Youth "as women are wont to do with their mates". [Forced Exposure 7/8] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thurston's first band upon coming to NYC from Connecticut was the Coachmen. They existed from early '78 to Fall '80 and included J.D. King (gtr, voc) (to cartooning/illustrating), Bob Pullin (bs)(to art direction), Dan Walworth (dr) (to filmmaking), Dave Keay (repl Dan) (ex Harry Toledo, to Sonic Youth, Soma Holiday) and Mary Lemly (voc for a short time). One posthumous release: FAILURE TO THRIVE Thurston's Song / Girls Are Short / Household Word // Radical Lifestyle / Stay In My Room 1988 - 12"/CD - New Alliance, NAR035, US Thurston, J.D., Bob and Dan play on this 1979 recording. J.D. King's excellent liner notes tell the full Coachmen story. "...December 1976 ...I was living in Providence RI... that Christmas season, on a visit to my family in Conn... I drove to Cutler's records in New Haven. While checking out the Velvet Underground section this blonde mop-topped teenage kid zips up next to me and pseudo-casually browses through the records in the adjacent bin. 'Not much in the Velvets section these days,' he says." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just Another Asshole was a NY art magazine. Issue 5 was an LP released in Dec 1981 and consisted of 45 second contributions by 78 NYC artists. It comes in a die cut sleeve with rubber stamped labels and a track list taped on. Our merry band contributed the following. Shift {Lee Ranaldo} / Radio Song {Anne DeMarinis} / The Fucking Youth Of Today {Thurston Moore} / Working Youth {Kim Gordon and Miranda} Note that Kim and Miranda's piece is not untitled, a common mistake which stems from the erroneous listing in B.George and Martha DeFoe's book. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thurston was in Even Worse for 4 gigs in maybe 1982. Even Worse, a NY hardcore contempory of Kraut, Stimulators, Beastie Boys etc released a single in 1982, Mouse Or Rat? / 1984 (Worse Than You, WORST0001). Thurston is listed as a band member on the sleeve and the insert has a photo of Thurston on stage with the band but Thurston does NOT play on it, as they say "he was unfortunately out of town when we recorded it". A second single was released in 1988, Leaving / One Night Stand (Autonomy, 002), Thurston plays on and co-wrote the b-side. Other Even Worse appearances (all without Thurston) are on the Roir cassette New York Thrash and the Mystic LP's You Can't Argue With Sucksess and Mystic Sampler #1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glenn Branca - "The John Mayall of the Lower East scum rock scene" In 1980 Glenn Branca first convened his Ensemble, a group with very floating membership formed to realise his early compositions for massed gtrs and later his symphonies. Thurston, Lee, Richard, Ann (and Kim?) all performed with him at some time, Lee being with the group for 2.5 years. Glenn says "Lee is still one of the only musicians who took it upon himself to really push the music when we were actually performing it." Below are listed the Branca releases with SY input. I can't imagine there's any of them you wouldn't want to track down and listen to. You should also try and find the singles by Glenn's early bands Theoretical Girls (US Millie) and The Static (My Relationship / Don't Let Me Stop You), both being real ear-openers as to one of the 'influences' on Sonic Youth. For a comprehensive interview with Glenn see Forced Exposure #16. THE ASCENSION Nov 1981 - 12" - 99, 99-001, US 1995? - CD - Robi Droli, RDC5021, Italy Lee on guitar. The other side is by John Giorno. This piece is also on the Giorno CD compilation Cash Cows (Giorno Poetry Systems, GPS044CD, US). SYMPHONY #1 (TONAL PLEXUS) 1983 - CS - Roir, A125, US 1991 - 2xLP/CD - Danceteria, DANLP081/DANCD081 Thurston on tenor, soprano and bowed gtrs, Lee on soprano and steel wire gtrs, Ann DeMarinis on keyboards and percussion, Richard Edson on trumpet.
