Don't put me off cuz I'm on fire
And I can't quench my desire
Don't you know that I'm burning up for your love
You ain't convinced that that is enough
I put myself in this position
And I deserve the imposition
But you don't even know I'm alive
And there's something in my heart that won't die
I'm burnin' up

I'm burnin' up
I'm burnin' up
I'm burnin' up

You're always closing your door
Well that only makes me want you more
Day and night I cry for your love
You're not convinced that that is enough
To justify my wanting you
Tell me what you want me to do
I'm not blind and I know
That you want to want me but you can't let go

I'm burnin' up
I'm burnin' up
I'm burnin' up

Do you wanna see me down on my knees?
Or bending over backwards
Now would you be pleased?
Unlike the others I'd do anything
I ain't the same, see, I got no shame
I'm on fire
Fire

Come on, let go

Do you wanna see me down on my knees?
Or bending over backwards
Now would you be pleased?
Unlike the others I'd do anything
I ain't the same, see, I got no shame
I'm on fire
I'm on fire
I'm burnin' up (fire)
I'm burnin' up
I'm burnin' up
I'm burnin' up
(you know you got me burnin' up baby)
I'm burnin' up
(you know you got me burnin' up baby)
I'm burnin' up (I'm burning up for your love)
I'm burnin' up (I'm burning up for your love)
I'm burnin' up (I'm burning up for your love)
I'm burnin' up (fire)
I'm burnin' up... (x 4, fade)

NOTES:

  • Originally performed by Madonna.
  • This is a Mike Watt demo, no Sonic Youth members perform on it. Mike gave the tape to Thurston and he dug it, so Sonic Youth did their Madonna tune (Into the Groove) and a 7-inch w/ Burnin' Up/Tuff Titty Rap/Into the Groove was released in 1986. This was the first Ciccone Youth release. However, the version of "Burnin' Up" that appears on the 7" release is a different recording, featuring Watt on vocals/bass/guitar, Greg Ginn on guitar solos, and Ethan James on Linn drum.
  • Recorded in May 1986 on four-track at Watt's house in San Pedro.

ALTERNATE VERSIONS:

  • On "Into The Groovy" 7" - ALT. - 4:11

Recorded on 5/5/86 at Radio Tokyo in Venice, CA. Greg Ginn's guitar overdub was done on 7/8/86. That's if you believe the 7". If you believe the 12", it was recorded in March '86 and Greg's overdub was done in August. Then again, "7/8/86" could mean August 7th, I suppose..
