Who else is signing in for an accoustic Sonic Youth album!

..and who knows an accoustic band that plays like SY?

Personally I would not find much interest in this. The acoustic thing is usually a sign of musicians who have run out of ideas and want to repackage the same old thing in a different way.

Its kind of like a Sonic Youth Christmas album. Please don't.

I don't know... The world has plenty of interesting guitarists working in the acoustic format and doing stuff that is out of the ordinary. I don't see why Sonic Youth as a group shouldn't be able to be among them. Yes, acoustic music has been badly polluted by the unplugged craze, but just because some musicians have so little imagination that to them acoustic has to mean seventies-singer-songwriter, doesn't mean that everyone will be that way. I would see an acoustic SY as being more John Fahey than John Denver.

I coudn't disagree with that statement any more, it doesn't really hold up... because if you can write good music on an acoustic guitar it can usually sound good an an electric, it does not usually work the other way around (depends obviously on the context), that is why alot of musicians begin to write on acoustic even though they are electric guitarists, Thurston included as he's written many songs on acoustic that end up being electric SY songs. also Thurston's new album is quite good and its mostly acoustic guitar! unless you don't like it?

Yes, I'd like to see a totally acoustic set, as well. And not just folksy renditions of 'Candle' or whatever; but new tracks, some spoken-word pieces (a la 'Me N Jill' or some of the stuff from NYC Ghosts & Flowers), some jazzy stuff with piano, trumpet and sax--you know, every explorable facet of the acoustic experience.

if they did original music on acoustic guitars, then yeah, i'd like to hear that.

but if they will do reinterpretations of their own past songs, then no thank you.

doing acoustic versions of old songs = MTV Unplugged.

I don't think they'd be going there.

Actually I remember reading somewhere that Thurston wrote Pattern Recognition on an acoustic guitar. It would be interesting in the extreme to see how SY translates into the acoustic medium. I mean Kill Yr. Idols would need at least a 10-guitar orchestra. Can you imagine that? Or SY performing acoustically with a detuned philharmonic orcehstra backing them up. I would love to see SY's sound stripped bare and lying naked, mainly because SY's sound is basically a homage to the whole electric sound, so it would be almost sacrilegous...

well this is how I intrepreted the intent of the original post - when Nirvana did it I was just like, this sucks and they're done. (and of course every band since with one 'hit' has to get up there and do the acoustic cliche).

Sure, if they went on stage and did some WORK with the acoustics it might be interesting...I've seen Thurston solo several times now when he plays only acoustic and its ok.

didnt they go acoustic for one of neil youngs bridge concerts? i seem to remember sound problems and kim cursing and then smashing her acoustic bass guitar. i remember listening to mote from this concert some time ago.

yes to new acoustic no to old acoustic.

maybe thier next tour could be daydream nation acoustic. then they could release the sy sings the body electric ddn dvd/cd and sy sings the body acoustic ddn dvd/cd with liner notes by famous friends listing their favorite ddn songs.

Hella did it AMAZINGLY.
Nirvana did an incredible job, too. Both bands still kick(ed) ass afterwards.
But, in the mainstream particularily, there's far too much "I'm going acoustic [for this shitty, one-off album of old songs]!" Fuck dude, Jay-Z went acoustic. I call shenanegans!

I'd loce to hear acoustic originals, though. That would be amazing, especially after hearing T's album.

They played two of these: One during the Goo era - which you speak of - and another at the time of Sonic Nurse. The second time was far more successful, and opened with "I Love You Golden Blue" with organ and piano.

An acoustic set would be fine, but, as someone else said, while guitars will probably be crucial, the album should encompass multiple acoustic instruments, such as Kim's trumpet, Lee's organ, and Steve's clay drum (does he still have it?). Throw in Mats Gustavsson, and you've got quite a party...

Actually, I thought Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York was one of the four or five best albums of 1994, coming somewhere between Sloan's Twice Removed (#1) and Neil Young's Sleeps With Angels.

I'm now waiting for a a capella album!

When they make an acoustic album I want to hear new songs too...not an unplugged version of old songs. They also could make me very happy of covering some Carpenters songs again!
