During the same time those guitars were designed and constructed in Kalamazoo, the ES 335, first introduced in 1958, became a favorite of blues, rock, country, and pop acts for its elegant design and wide array of colorful tone combinations. Now, the Epiphone Dot, named in reference to its simple "Dot" fingerboard inlays, brings the sustain and resonance of the clsssic semi-hollow design for a bounty less than most solid body guitars. The “Dot” is the same axe that has been the bell weather of every rock and roll breakthrough. And now for the first time, the “Dot” puts that classic sound and over 40 years of refinements in your hands, the Epiphone way. Serial: EE06065814. Compared to most guitars in this shop, this one looks pretty new. A couple light marks. All tone electronics have been removed. Includes Bigsby. Plays well. Ships in a gig bag.

The Ranaldo model also features a pair of wide-range humbuckers similar to those found on a '70s Telecaster Deluxe. Lee's primary guitar for many many years. Included in this listing is the original prototype neck that was on the guitar for many many years before being swapped out for a newer production model after being thrashed from years of shows. No serial information as this is the original prototype. Heavily abused. Tone electronics removed. Pickup selector is scratchy but settles in. Very stickered. Whammy bar in place. In gig bag.

NOTES:
Put all of that capability into a guitar as visually interesting as this one, and you have an instrument that screams vintage vibe and character. Body: Double cutaway contoured body in Sunburst finish. Brass control plates. Single-ply pickguard. Covered bridge with adjustable saddles, a throw mute, and a vibrato tailpiece. Cream top hat style knobs with gold inserts. Brass throw control with curved arm. Neck: Slim C shape hardwood neck and bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. Brass bubble tuning machines with white triangular buttons. 1 9/16” nut width and zero fret. .83” deep at the 1st fret and .86” deep at the 12th. Electronics: Framus brass-covered single-coil pickups. 3 x on/off pickup switches. 1 x on/off organ switch, 1 x on/off tone effect switch for the neck, and 1 x on/off tone effect switch for the bridge. 3 x tone controls, one for each pickup. 1 x master volume control. 1 x organ control knob. Weight: 8 lbs 14 oz Playability/Sound: The slim profile neck profile plays great top to bottom and should be easy to play for most modern players, plus boasts a smaller nut width which is perfect for players who have smaller hands or like extended reach over the fingerboard (great for thumb wraparounds). The pickups have a very interesting voice. They are full of vintage vibe, with a ton of jangle and a warm, rounded midrange. Serial: 0293-651. Player wear. Crown tuners. Gold hardware. Tuning: DDDDAA. Low A buzz. Not making sound. Currently a bad connection somewhere. Sounds like a grounding issue. What appears to be an OHSC.

NOTES:
The "I" means it has a 12" radius (and a "II" would indicated a 7.5" radius). The guitars are far closer to the early G&L guitars than anything EBMM produced. Long story short, Leo also had a company called "CLF Research"; although Leo had the most shares in MusicMan, the guitars were actually produced by CLF Research, sold to MusicMan, who in turn sold them to the dealers. Leo had a falling out with his other partners and left MusicMan circa late 1979/early 1980. At that point Leo partnered with George Fullerton to design a new line of guitars (G&L Guitars) while continuing to produce the MusicMans. He ran G&L Guitars out of the same factory as CLF Research. MusicMan reported some issues with the CLF Research-produced instruments and terminated the production contract - at which point Leo officially retired the CLF name and continued production and sales activities as G&L Guitars. MusicMan, in the meantime, contracted with Grover Jackson to fix the problem parts and finish production of guitars and basses from left-over CLF parts. Serial: G004824. Checking. Denting. Heavily abused. Cream color. Gaff tape markers on body and headstock indicating tuning. Patina. Sweat and tape residue on control plate. Heavy wear. Gibson Hardshell case. Non original. Scratchy volume and pickup selector. Electronics work. Unsure what the switch does in our testing. Frets are worn. Neck is pretty straight although the bridge / action are a little high. C neck profile. 7 1/4" radius. E B D F# B C#. I wonder what the EBDF#BC# tuning was used for!

NOTES:
In 1974, he partnered with Marc McElwee and Gary Kramer to start Travis Bean Guitars, which made high-end electric guitars and basses featuring machined aluminum necks. This was an unusual design, departing from more traditional wood necked instruments. The aluminum center section ran through the instrument body, with the pickups directly mounted to the aluminum. The majority of these instruments featured solid koa wood bodies and humbucker pickups. Though praised for their sound, the use of aluminum necks also made Travis Bean guitars heavier than other electric guitars. Models included the Artist, Standard, Wedge (rare), and TB500 (rare) with single coil pickups. Serial: 102. Markings. Gaft tape. All tone electronics removed. Volume pot is a little scratchy but settles in nicely. This is the only guitar to have been stolen, returned, and then auctioned! |

NOTES:
There is no filter, no resonance, no ring modulator sand no sign of any arpeggiators or sequencers on-board. Although this is unfortunate, its strengths lie in its ability to record data manipulation in real-time and its multi-timbrality, both of which lend themselves to creating some complex and cool sounds perfect for ambient, dub and industrial styles. It also has a drum kit sound set and simple built-in effects. A desktop module version of the SY22 is the TG33 which also has increased memory. The SY22 has been used by Moby, Skinny Puppy and Scanner. Serial: HJ01473. Couple broken keys. Missing it's power supply. Includes a couple disks. Unit powers on, however a couple of the black keys do not work. SY markings in tape on board. Used on either Drunken Butterfly from the album Dirty. According to Lee, this was based on a Glen Branket tune. Purchased based on Sun Ra's playing together with Sonic Youth and Thurston wanting to achieve a similar sound. I believe the song in question is "Swimsuit Issue" and Thurston does use this keyboard to play a percussive sound before the vocal comes in, probably the keys that have been marked with tape.
