KIM ART SHOW IN BERLIN

Kim is part of an art show currently viewing in Berlin, Germany:

Description
Monika Baer, Kim Gordon, Nick Mauss
27.04.2012 – 26.05.2012

When David Lieske and I met to discuss the exhibition by Monika Baer, Kim Gordon and Nick Mauss and the press release I had agreed to write for it, David told me about paintings he had seen at Monika Baer’s studio: something with a disconnected hand on it, a red brick wall and a scratched white surface, and canvases with small mirrors integrated into a monochrome relief-like texture that would be perfect for a group show because they visually incorporated their surroundings but might not end up at Mathew, and about her laborious painting procedures.

David showed me photos Kim Gordon had sent of her studio wall with arrangements of small-scale paintings on paper, rather gestural, some of them with text, others abstract or semi-figurative, and also pieces with panties stretched over canvas that were overpainted black afterwards.

Nick Mauss would produce his first ever works on canvas, David assumed, stretched on a column-like construction extending from floor to ceiling in the middle of the space. Motifs yet unknown.

We spoke about how there was a demand for painting, obviously, although often not acknowledged in discussions, also a commercial demand. A demand for signifiers of subjectivity, taste, discourse and/or sophistication and why these three artists could function so well as projection screens for all these kinds of demands and desires and how they might satisfy them with what they appear to offer, or actually offer and what that would probably lead to. But then there are also nuances in these desires, and there are other desires as well, and the works seem to insist on that too.

Lee Ranaldo

Tuesday, March 20th, 3pm – 6pm

on Brian Turner’s show

Despite a vast history of production, poetry, writing, photography, and of course helping re-invent the modern approach to electric guitar chronicled under his belt, Sonic Youth guitarist and co-founder Lee Ranaldo has yet to release a solo album of his songs in a rock band context until now. His brand new Matador release “Between the Time and Tides” comes out March 20th, and on this day Lee visits Brian Turner’s show to blast through what’s sure to be an amazing set of new songs and probably some surprises as well. His live band, which features Alan Licht, Irwin Menken, and longtime SY drummer cohort Steve Shelley, has been playing around NYC since October’s debut at the Bell House. Not only do they evoke Lee’s finest moments and songcraft from his contributions to Sonic Youth, but also can be said to further feed his pure classic rock jones via the likes of Crazy Horse and Television. Not to be missed!

KIM GORDON- RESCUE STORY

Lanore Hahn was anticipating a relatively uneventful return journey back to her house in Wisconsin when fate intervened in the form of a tiny piglet now named Kim Gordon. Lanore and her boyfriend were driving down a backcountry road in Mitchell, South Dakota when they spotted Kim running around in the middle of the street all by her lonesome. With no farms or other people nearby, Lanore stopped the car and with a little determination, managed to catch the little pig and place her in the vehicle.

KIM – HELD UP BY COLUMNS

Kim is part of a group show called ‘Held Up By Columns’ at the Renwick gallery, 45 Renwick st. NY, NY. According to the gallery:
The Newspaper is a ticker tape of the stock of our societies. It cascades the events of the cities into the country. It cascades the events of their countries into our city. It is held up by columns. Circulation, the essential technique of today, is the old method of the newspaper. Yet few documents so inspired become so obsolete, so quick, so cyclical as the newspaper. They are witness of the day, yesterday always by their nature. They age in the sun, like those who write them and those for whom and about whom they are written. The nature of the material itself is meant to be left behind, it is frail, and bleeds copy onto the hands of its beholder. It folds everything into itself.

Held Up By Columns is an exhibition of artworks which utilize the newspaper. This utilization occurs across a broad range of techniques; from it’s material presence in collages and paintings; to its surfacing as imagery in photographs, prints and other media; to its functions, structures, and formats serving as a model for how an artwork is created and exhibited. The newspaper’s widespread availability and the supposed ubiquity of its coverage ensure it as a form of Everymaterial. It’s appearance as the thread for an exhibition is not exactly an exaltation nor an epitaph of the medium, but just a herald of its usage.

The exhibition features the work of Becca Albee, Eric Anglès, Julieta Aranda, Kerstin Brätsch, Sarah Charlesworth, Jacob Dyrenforth, Nikolas Gambaroff, Robert Gober, Kim Gordon, Joseph Grigely, Karl Haendel, Patrick Hill, Christian Holstad, Matt Keegan, Michael Krebber, Jason Loebs, Dave McKenzie, Ulrike Müller and Carola Dertnig, Florian Morlat, Matt Mullican, Murad Khan Mumtaz, Martha Rosler, Al Ruppersberg, Kate Shepherd, Paul Sietsema, Al Taylor, Wolfgang Tillmans, Paul Thek, Gabriel Vormstein, Kelley Walker, Jordan Wolfson and Amy Yao.
