SYR 9 ‘Simon Werner A Disparu’ CD/LP/DIGITAL OUT NOW

Sonic Youth’s soundtrack of the French film ‘Simon Werner A Disparu’ is now available – cds and lps(with download card) are available   now at our webstore and the digital download is available via Midheaven.com (song samples available here) or iTunes. The album is available in France at major retailers or via iTunes.

In Spring 2010 Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey to watch the rushes of a new film, ‘Simon Werner a Disparu,’ by French director Fabrice Gobert. The band spent the following few weeks recording music which was then shaped to fit the various scenes of the film.  For this release it was decided to do more than present the abbreviated clips of music used in the film. Instead the band went back to the original tapes and re-organized the various pieces; sometimes montaging multiple tracks together, other times extending cues into new sonic realms.

Visual Artist Cameron Jamie will present his new film ‘Massage The History’ at the Museum of Modern Art in New York Monday, Jan 24 at 7:00pm. The film features the Sonic Youth song of the same name.  More information from MoMA below.

AN EVENING WITH CAMERON JAMIE
Monday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m.

Cameron Jamie (b. 1969, Los Angeles) presents the New York premiere of his most recent 35mm short film, Massage the History (2007–09). Featuring an original soundtrack by Sonic Youth, the film documents young adults from Alabama who dance themselves into trance states in the privacy of their living rooms. Also presented are three related videos: Kranky Klaus (2002–03), about an ancient Austrian folk tradition involving a sadistic mythical beast and the benevolent St. Nicholas; Spook House (2002–03), which follows Detroit suburbanites acting out primitive urges on Halloween; and BB (1998–2000), in which teenagers stage wrestling matches behind Los Angeles tract houses. An American artist living in Paris, Jamie experiments with and moves freely among moving image and music performance, sculptural installation, drawing, photography, and zine publishing. Following the screening, Jamie will take part in an onstage conversation with Kathy Halbreich, MoMA’s Associate Director.

DRIFT HASSELT

Lee has a new DVD of his Drift collaboration with Leah Singer.

According to tapingpolicies.be: DRIFT HASSELT is a live DVD by Leah Singer and Lee Ranaldo performing DRIFT at Kunstencentrum BELGIE on November 24th 2006 in Hasselt, Belgium.

DRIFT is a multimedia project in which Leah Singer uses 16mm analytical film projectors performing live while Lee Ranaldo responds with guitar, tapes, loops and texts to create an immersive surrounding.

This DVD focuses on the performance side of DRIFT, where the actions by both artists are edited together with the sounds and images much like a live concert registration. Captured with 4 camera’s and recorded on 2-track, the video shows a new perspective to an already impressive project.

DRIFT HASSELT was assembled in 2008 to be part of the traveling exposition Sensational Fix by Sonic Youth.

From Matador: There is now a 120 gram version of the Eternal dbl LP at a lower cost.
It still looks and feels really nice; Here are the differences:

– 120 gram RTI vinyl instead of 180
– No special varnishes on the gatefold
– No sticker inside

Still has the high-quality of RTI pressings, the heavy-duty Stoughton gatefold sleeve, and the printed inners. Plus the MP3 coupon.

Also available via the sy.com store.

SILVER SESSIONS AND DOWNLOADS

Sonic Youth’s 1998 noise opus ‘Silver Sessions’ is back in print after a lenghty absence.  As Thurston describes in the liner notes: “(we) turned every amp we owned on to 10+ and leaned as many guitars and basses we could plug in against them and they roared/HOWLED like airplanes burning over the pacific” This reissue comes in a handsome mylar reflective jacket.

‘Silver Sessions’ is available on disk and also for direct download from the sonicyouth.com store. Also now available for download from the store are some EP’s: the SYR series, TV Shit, & Master-Dik.  All are available as DRM-free lossless files. Look for some out-of-print ‘official’ bootlegs to be available as downloads soon.  More groovy stuff coming, we’ll keep you updated.

‘STAR POWER’ ACOUSTIC SINGLE

An acoustic version of the SY classic ‘Star Power’ is now available via download. This version was recorded over the summer in Portland, Oregon between tour dates and was featured in the television program Gossip Girl on October 12.

Also available with a ‘Star Power’ T-shirt, or all bundled together. Or simply download the song – a first from sonicyouth.com.

Through iTunes ‘Star Power (Acoustic)’ is available as a single with Antenna (album version) as the flip side.

SY ON BAD BONN COMP

Sonic Youth will be appearing on a new comp related to the Bad Bonn Kilbi Festival. The SY cut is a performance of the song No Way which takes a turn for the weird when the band’s guitar amps overwhelm the available electrical power. The album is now available for preorder.

According to the three:four records site:  “Each track is previously unreleased or rare. Sonic Youth’s contribution was recorded at the 2009 kilbi, the annual Bad Bonn’s festival. If you ever wanted to know how the band sounds without guitars, you have to hear this. As you might guess, we are pretty excited! And we hope you are too. It will come in a lovely black and white cover with a scissors cut made by Jad Fair (click here to see it). As usual, it will be a one-time pressing in limited edition. This time, it is 650 copies only. We still have a lot of work to do on this record, even if the master and artwork steps are over. So, as you might have noticed with the record’s name, it will be released around the second week of February. Sorry, it won’t come under your Christmas tree! We will have around 100 copies available for pre-order on January. We will also put two songs on our myspace page and on the website soon. Stay tuned not to miss anything!”
